Can I block an external port with my DIR-890L?
« on: December 28, 2017, 05:52:28 PM »

Apparently I have port 9100 open on my external IP. I had the pleasure of someone printing random ASCII art on my printer because this is related to my printer somehow. I do have port 9100 open within my internal port forwarding rules.

Is there some way for me to close the port from incoming traffic from the wild internet?

Thank you for the help!

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Whats the Model# of the printer?
Does the printer have a configuration access web page? If so, you can disable port 9100 on the printer. However not sure if this will effect printing.

Hello!

It's HW version A1 and firmware version 1.20.
I am in the US.

The printer is an Epson WF-2760. I'll have to look into additional configuration options for the printer. The software that was installed with it does not appear to have anything related to ports there.

When I go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers, then right click on the printer for Printer Properties, then select the Ports tab, there is no listing of port 9100. I'm not sure if this is relevant or not.

Thanks!

If the printer is connected to the router via LAN cable, see if you can access the IP address it's given by the router in a web page. I may have embedded web page services and features.

I just found a setting called "RAW(Port9100) Settings" and a checkbox titled "Allow RAW(Port9100) Printing", which is checked to allow it. Is that the problem?

Lets try un-ckecking that and apply the setting.
Do a print test from one of your PCs to make sure the printer still prints. Re-enable this if printing doesn't work.

Is the FW up to date on the printer as well?

Thank you for the help!

I have a question though: is this something that the router couldn't fix? I am happy that it seems you found the solution, but I'd like to understand the technical aspects a bit more. Should a router's firewall be able to stop a component from opening a port to the internet? Was this just the easiest solution? Or the only solution?

Thanks again!

Would need more info on were the problem was coming from, whether from the WAN side or LAN side. Could be something that is only preventable on the printer itself. Seen odd issues with printers over the years. This one is a first however have only dealt with HP brand printers. This could be a specific bug to Epson only.
