DIR-825 B1 2.06NA does not get DHCP from DSL modem
« on: April 20, 2012, 02:47:49 AM »

Signed up for Sonic Fusion, received ZTE 831 modem in bridge mode, DHCP off.

Have tried many variations of D-Link settings with WAN DHCP and it just does not get an IP address from the ISP. Unicast on/off, DNS relay on/off, SPI on/off, etc.

With the modem settings unchanged, can plug cable from PC directly into modem. It gets an ISP DHCP and works fine. DNS and internet access work, can surf google.com.

Have an Airlink AR525W wireless router. When it is set to DHCP WAN, it also "just works" when plugged into the DSL modem. It is using the router MAC, did NOT clone the MAC from my PC. The Airlink LAN IP is 192.168.1.1, same as the D-Link. The copy-paste from the Airlink configuration screen:
Connection Type:   Automatic Configuration - DHCP
  Internet IP Address:   173.228.4.46
  Subnet Mask:   255.255.255.0
  Default Gateway:   173.228.4.1
  DNS 1:   208.201.224.11
  DNS 2:   208.201.224.33
  DNS 3:   0.0.0.0
  MTU:   Auto

The D-Link was working fine with ATT DSL and PPPoE (this is in SF Bay Area, 94022), but extremely frustrating that it does not seem work to with Sonic DHCP. Called Sonic support, and was able to confirm that plugging the PC directly into the modem works fine. So it seems there is a problem with the DIR-825 (or configuration of it).

Any guidance would be much appreciated.

Are you setting up the 825 for DHCP or PPPoE under Setup/Internet/Manual/Connection type? For most DSL applications, PPPoE is used on the router and Select Always ON.

Check the cables between the ISP modem and router, CAT 5e or 6 recommended.

Sonic.net says they to not use PPPoE, that the modem is pass-through and should be configured for DHCP.

My Airlink Wi-Fi is configured with DHCP from the WAN and it works perfectly. Well, it doesn't really work perfectly -- that's why I have the D-Link.

But why doesn't the D-Link pick up DHCP from the ISP? The PC does when plugged directly into the modem and so does the Airlink.

Also want to add that the D-Link was working fine with ATT DSL over PPPoE. So I believe the only thing that was changed is new DSL provider, new modem.

Possible there could be an incompatibility with this ISP modem.
Swap cable between the ISP Modem and router.

Power off both 825 and modem after swapping cables with a known working cable. Power ON the modem first and let it sync. Then power on the router. Log in and check the Status/Device Info/WAN section.

If you don't see any internet address and DNS appear, I would take this router to a different location like a friend, neighbor or families place with internet to see if it connects on there ISP Modem. If it doesn't then you'll know. IT should though.

Did a factory reset (hold down the pinhole) and was able to connect.
Re-applied settings one-by-one and discovered that the system Gateway Name cannot be blank.

This is found under:
http://support.dlink.com/emulators/dir825/Admin.html

Was paranoid about having the name of the box shown externally, so I blanked it out. Worked fine with PPPoE. Does not work with DHCP and bridged modem (at least with Sonic.net).

While searching for a solution, saw other posts about not being able to get DHCP to work with Verizon, did not see any resolution. Maybe same issue holds for that.

Also upgraded to 2.07NA and so far so good...
