I can't connect to router configuration page!
« on: October 11, 2011, 10:05:38 AM »

I have a D-Link dsl 2640u, it's a modem but since it has 4 ports im assuming it's also a router.
My problem is that when i enter my ip address into the address bar it doesn't recognize it. I can't use Utorrent or anything that requires ports to be opened..and it's a pain in the butt. when I type ipconfig on my command prompt it brings up..172.16.X.X and when i enter it into the address bar nothing is found. I'd like to port forward by accessing the modem's config page.

I read on another thread that i could set my own ip address by going to: Control Panel>Network and Sharing center> Local Area Network>Properties of Ipv6 and typing my own ip address but when i do this i lose my internet connection.
Any Solution? I want to use Utorrent by port forwarding..
Thanks in Advance

PS: If this is the wrong thread then sorry i couldn't find any other thread which looked appropriate..

hat HW version is your router?
What FW version is currently loaded?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.

Some other tips to use:

Ensure DNS IP addresses are being filled in under Setup/Internet/Manual? You can find these under Status/Device Info/Wan section.
Turn off ALL QoS (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices on the router.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP.

HW Version 2.01
FW Version C2
I've got DSL but im not sure if it has a built in router..it has 4 ports though so i'm assuming it is.
D-Link Dsl 2640U
Bridging is worth a try..but is there any way i can access my setup page..The IP address i have isn't working for me..

To access the gateway of the Dlink router, just disconnect the ethernet connecting it to your DSL gateway.

Thanks for the tip Hard Harry, it won't work because when i take out the dsl i get an empty gateway..
However if I go to Network and Sharing center>Local Area Connection>IPv4 Properties and i enter 192.168.1.1 into the gateway..i can access my router config page..but it hardly works..it was working yesterday but im having difficulty accessing today..any other ways of configuring my modem/router>
Feel free to ask me anything
Thanks in advance.

Probably because with no gateway, your computer locks with a 169. Once you get in, change the default gateway of the router and change the DHCP range. So if your modem gateway is 192.168.0.1 with range 192.168.0.2-99 then change your dlink router to 192.168.1.1 with a range of 192.168.1.2-99. Make sense?

Possible that someone might help review your router settings with you using teamviewer.com. Its free and safe.

Wait..what? 169 is a invalid. Its what your computer gives itself when it can't a valid IP. In this case, when it can't get a valid IP because it can't reach the DHCP server, because the computer does not know its gateway.  So 169=not online...so how could you go to a website to show that you have a 169? That would be like calling yourself on the phone..and getting yourself. I am confused now. LOL

Check it out.

btw this is when i go to whatsmyip.org but in my command prompt when i type ipconfig it says 172.xx.xx.xx as my default gateway which is really weird..

Have you ever seen this type of dsl connection before?
Is there any ways of using utorrent?

Thanks in advance.

OOOh. Your IP is 196, not 169. Totally different. 196 is a valid range. All is well in the universe. LOL

172 IP are usually private, but only if its within 172.16.x.x through 172.31.x.x.

As for have I ever seen a connection like this? Nope. Usually 172 is the range used by ISP to lock you inside their network when you forgot to pay your bill. LOL. It is sometimes called the "Garden" or "Walled Garden".

But lets be clear. What is

Modem IP
Modem Gateway

Dlink IP
Dlink Gateway

Can I change my IP without losing my connection?
Or can I use No-IP.com and connect to Utorrent through this?
