Firmware v1.22 Beta 02 Feedback
« on: January 15, 2010, 11:09:38 PM »

So got a new build and for me on an A1 HW using Gaming and Game fuel rules and Wireless is set for N mode only at 2.4Ghz, I've been enjoying some good stable connections on my Xbox and MacBook Pro. No disconnects. House network system has been good too.

I'm in about 15-20 feet away from the router in my office behind a closed door. I do like the low Packets Dropped and Error rates. 5Ghz is worse however been told using 5Ghz should be use in line of sight with out any obstructions so walls and doors will have more of an adverse affect while using 5Ghz.  :-\ So i'm hanging with 2.4Ghz for now. So far, v1.22 seems very stable for me. Been up since last night. Played xbox for a couple of hours with out seeing any issues accept for one game with others that seem to be introducing lag.  >:(Other then that, I'm happy.  ;D

Any one else???? Let us know.  ;)

That's good to hear, i'm running 1.16 currently and have been reluctant to jump to the 1.2x series for fear of having all kinds of problems and not having the option to go back after seeing all of the posts recently about 1.21+ problems.

My current wireless config is the same, so i'm interested in seeing if your setup remains stable before I make the jump.  :)

I want to get your professional ;) opinion, should I make the jump, or stick w/ 1.16 beta?

My professional optinion would be that if your router is working well in all areas. I would keep it like that. Your not missing out on much of anything. I've always tired to keep that rule if possible. However if you think you like to make the jump then sure, go for it. Yes you can't go back to prior 1.2x once your up. Been very happy with 1.22 and seems a lot more stable. 5Ghz still needs some work and boost. Getting a lot of errors and dropped packets if i'm more than 10 feet away from the router. 5Ghz is short band waves and any obstructions like walls and doors have an effect on the signal from what I've been told. Better for line of site kinda thing. Im enjoying sitting here in the living room on my MacBook Pro on N mode only at 2.4Ghz.

Yeah, I had an uptime of somewhere around 120 days on 1.16 beta since I last rebooted the router, until I turned the wireless on 2 days ago.

I have a Buffalo router running "Tomato" firmware that's acting as just an AP, but it only supports B/G wireless.

I want to use the N only mode on the DGL-4500 but the last time I tried it on 1.16 beta, it didn't seem to be too much of an improvement streaming 1080p mkv video from an internal home server that's connected via gigabit ethernet to the 4500 and being viewed on three N-capable notebooks, so I turned it back off and continued using the buffalo AP.

Did you notice an improvement in N speeds from 1.1x to 1.2x?

Thanks for all the help, it's very much appreciated.  :)

You might ask others on here if they've seen any speeds improvements going from 1.1x to 1.2x. I didn't start using the Wireless on the 4500 until i got my MacBook Pro for my birthday. I had been using a Apple Airport to hand my b/g devices so I had the 4500 Wifi shut off and FW was already at 1.21 by the time I figured out that my MBP had N capabilities. Sorry I can't off more info. Working on N only at 2.4Ghz seems really good. I think they could possibly up the range a bit more and do hope they can and possibly get the 5Ghz working better too. The speed on the 2.4Ghz is pretty good. I'm currently running 2.4Ghz N mode only. Seems really good and stable. I can transfer a 240Mb file from my wired file server in my office to my LT sitting here in the living room. Taking about 2-3mins. Seeing 1-3Mb transfer speeds. Using 5Ghz I was seeing speeds up to 7Mbs. But there were more dropped packets and errors. I was in the bedroom next to the office when I was doing this, with in 8ft. If I was in the living room, 15-20 ft away from the router, the speeds dropped and sometimes the transfer would not complete.

I think also streaming heavy 1080p video streams is not going to be perfect. Wireless is really at the stage, IMO, to handle large data or bandwidth right now. It's hard enough making sure that XBL users work well over WiFi connections giving the data, voice that needs processing. LOL. Hope someday WiFi will be robust enough to handle most anything.

Yeah, the 1080p video works, its just that there might be a tiny albeit annoying hiccup in playback once every minute or two for less than a quarter of a second, but it's still enough where it's annoying.

I'm hoping with tweaking, I can get it stable w/o any interruptions.

The stream itself only takes about 25MB/sec max, so it's not the bandwidth, it's the stability of the connection itself.

The following are the stats I got w/ N Only, WISH enabled, doing a little web surfing and streaming a few videos for half an hour last night on 1.16 beta.

I think i'll give 1.22 a shot later this weekend or next.

Yeah, XBL users' connections really stink as is, I have my 360 hooked up wired, same w/ my gaming PC and PS3.

Thanks again for the info!

Furry, over how many days did you use the new beta before reporting here? If the dropped packets have been reduced, I'm going to upgrade tonight.

I can't say I can agree with this, with all the frustration I went and bought a netgear WNDR3700 router. I'm connected on wireless N 5Ghz and running no problems through 7 walls in the house from where the router is and the location of my notebook.

I would have to say something is still not right with the wireless unless you have huge interference in your area.

On the DLink routers, 5 GHz seems to work best with LoS and outdoors.  Not so much for indoors for some reason.  My guess it's just the radio.  I've had the 4500 for over a couple of years now, and it's never been stable on 5 GHz no matter how close or far I've been from the router.

As far as the FW goes, I've always done my normal battery of testing on it.  I flashed it about 21 hours ago, and it seems to be stable.  No reboots yet, and wireless seems MUCH more stable.  I've yet to do some full transfers of 2GB+ from wired Gb to my Wireless N MBP.

It does seem more responsive for sure, and DNS relay seems to be working as intended.  However, I am still having some problems with UPnP, and noticing a decrease in speed on the upload portion.

Update:  I thought I'd try to run some of the GameFuel settings, as I took them off previously due to router load perhaps, which caused crashing.  I set up the rules as normal, however I had a problem where after inputting 1 rule, and clicking reboot later, and starting to setup another rule and hitting save would kick me out to the login screen.  Can this get looked at?

I also noticed that after about 5 minutes of inactivity, it will kick you as well.  There used to be an option where you could specify the idle timeout, which brought you back to the login as well.  It seems to have disappeared.  Any reason as to why?

OK... I was pointed here about this latest fw load.  I still do not see a list of "fixes" from Dlink.

What currently loaded on your 4500 now?
Been pretty happy with v1.22 so far on my A1 HW.

I started having problems w/ Wireless N on FW 1.16 beta on A1 hardware, clients would drop out and would reconnect in about 1 minute. This happened on both 2.4 and 5GHz.

I upgraded to 1.22 B02 last night, and so far so good, and the lack of lost packets/errors is really amazing!  ;D

I'm using 5GHz WPA2 only w/ AES, Gamefuel on, WISH and WiFi Protected Setup off.

I really haven't stressed it with gaming/downloading/wireless yet, but I should know by today or tomorrow evening if this build is stable. If I run into any problems, i'll let you guys know. :)
