Should we upgrade to 1.05 or stay at 1.04
« on: October 22, 2007, 06:56:53 PM »

According to my router page: http://192.168.0.1/ I have "Firmware Version: 1.02 Hardware Version: A1 Product Page: DIR-655" (with blue LEDs).

People are complaining about loss of features and problems with 1.05 in this forum: http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r18844223-DIR655-New-Firmware-Version-105

Looking at the competition (here is an example page: http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_CASupport_C2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1166859967287&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=6728741396B24 ) I see they have a lot of GPL (source code http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=L_CASupport_C1&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1169671246380&pagename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper&lid=4638067287B25#WRT54GX4 here) and, seemingly, more settings to play with on their routers.

I like the DIR-655 (I also have the DWA-552).

My only complaints are that sometimes the signal drops (though this could be interference from the neighbours). I am convinced that these two products are the best from a technology (and hardware) standpoint. The QOS is wonderful !

I wish there was better support with Linux, that there were more settings to tweak in the router and more GPL (on this site, and elsewhere).

My question is, should I upgrade to 1.04 and wait for 1.06 ?

hi,

i am using a fw1.05 my DLink655.  So far so it seen ok. Connection was okie able to connect.
still feel kind of abit buggy. only thing i know of is that there no Logoff function.

My take is to wait till fw1.06  stay at 1.04. Upgrade to 1.05 if you keep having some issue with your router. Other than that. try to wait for fw1.06

:)

The only reason i would keep the DIR-655 at 1.04 is if you are using a centrino Wifi card.

I have found it to be more stable with the 1.04 and the internal nic's

Thanks. I will wait until I read that most people enjoy using 1.06 before I upgrade, 1.04 seems to work well enough that I am not going to go back to a prior version.

I was (still) having the troubles that others complaint of (dropped connections, constant re-booting, locked out of router and need to reset the router, etc.). http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=316.0 http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=317.15 etc.

I found that if I left it at factory default for a few hours and then logged into the router and changed one thing at a time that it seems to have stabilized itself - I still get drops but it reconnects quickly enough, constant re-booting is not occurring, and I am currently not locked out.

After upgrading my firmware (only) I got a bonus :-* .

My router page http://192.168.0.1/ now says I have new hardware and firmware:    Product Page: DIR-655        Firmware Version: 1.04     Hardware Version: A2

Previously my hardware was said to be "A1".

The other reasons to stay on 1.04 or < is if you are having VPN issues - well documented here. All ALG options disappears in 1.05 or >.  :'(
