SSL VPN + IE10 = 64bits error message
« on: May 27, 2013, 01:04:14 AM »

Hi,

we have been using our DSR-1000 as VPN server over SSL without issues. We used Win7 64bits machines with IE9 64bits version.

Since last IE update (to version 10), some clients are unable to login into the portal. They get the "64bits Internet Explorer is required to install this application" error message, though they are using the 64bits version. In IE9 we had two IE version (the normal and the 64bits one) but since IE10 there is only one version available (from the system menu and in the Program FIles folder) that is the 64bits one.

Our unit is runing firmware v. 1.06B43_WW. I am planning on upgrading to current available version (1.08B33), but in the changelog there is no information about this issue. Does anyone knows if it is solved in this new firmware?

Thanks.

Hi again,

after a lot of research I've found the problem. It's not  a D-LINK's problem, but a Microsoft's one. Let me explain.

The facts are:
- You have a Win7 64bits system
- You have IE9 installed (two versions: 32bits and 64bits, with two different shortcuts)
- Microsoft performs an automatic upgrade from IE9 to IE10 (Where I say 'automatic' you can understand 'updating without prompting the user' => http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/jj898508.aspx)
- The version installed by this process is a 32bits version (althought there is a 64bits available)
- The shortcut in your system still has the (64bits version) string (and that's the origin of my confusion).

So, instead of doing the logical thing, I got mad trying to do this work. After a little time, I found out in the task manager that I had the ****ing "iexplore*32" in it   >:(.

BTW, downloading and trying to install the 64bits version isn't a solution, because the system says that you already have the last IE.

Workaround: uninstall IE10, having in mind that,as it has been installed as an update, you have to uninstall from "installed updates", you wont see IE in your installed software.

Uninstall, reboot and you're back in IE9 with your 32 and 64bits versions.

I'm trying now to manually install IE10 64bits and check if everything works.

Regards.

Hi (again),

googling a little bit (more) I've found this:
http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/ie/forum/ie10-windows_7/update-removed-64-bit-ie-10/e8511df1-f8f5-4709-9ba1-a0b02c25e83d

In brief, IE10 installs a 32 and a 64 bits version. The fact is that, in order to use the 64bits version you must enable the "Enhanced Protected Mode". After that (and restarting IE), it runs by default in a 64bits environment. I've checked this and it's OK.

However, here I get the problem with my D-LINK unit. I'0m still getting the "64bits required...

Extra ball:
Having a look at the Javascript code in the page, it seems that 'navigator.userAgent' is used to check whetever the user is using IE 64 bits, but it's not being checked properly.

To make it work, once you have logged into the portal, add "?launch=true" to the URL and it will launch the SSLVPNClient. (i.e.    https://whateverisyoururl/scgi-bin/userPortal/sslvpnclient?launch=true)

I recommend that you phone contact D-Link support for your region and inquire about this with them. They should be made aware of this for future needs.

Thank you for this information and the time you took to research and find the solution. Hope it works well for you.

Enjoyl
