Title: DIR-842 strange dhcp ip release
Post by: lolobacsi on April 13, 2018, 02:41:14 AM
Hi there,
Had the strangest problem today. DIR-842 used to work properly and all of a sudden trying to connect to it via wireless, assigned other ip to my phone than specified in the dhcp settings. If i kill the wifi connection on my phone and try several times to reconnect sometimes i get the correct ip.
To be more specific, under dhcp i set the router to assign addresses from 192.168.5.5/240 over wifi and over the lan. On the newtork ip's are ok meaning that all pc's get ip from this only class. Phones/wireless devices sometimes get ip's from class 192.168.1.1/ . How in the world and from where does my router assign an ip from another class considering that everything is set manually on the router.
Any ideeas please? Maybe i am missing something, though never saw such weird thing so far. Might be a faulty router maybe ?
Thanks alot.
Cheers.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

192.168.5.5/240 ? or 192.168.5.5/24?

Not sure if this is a bug or something that router may not support fully. I presume .5.5/24 should work ok.

What happens if you change to 192.168.1.1 or .0.1/24?

Hi there,
Thanks for ypur reply.
Honestly can't remebber HW version because the router is located far from my location, software version is the latest because i've checked that. It's connected to a ISP router using a fiber connection, location Romania.
Interesting suggestion trying to use 0.1 or 1.1 classes but didn't see why i might do that because i never came across such a "glitch" where a router could assign other ip's instead of what it is "told" to assign. Never came accross a situation after having installed tens of routers and honestly didn't even cross my mind to try. Might worth giving it a try. Anyways, my client opted for a second internet connection for backup purposes and i've decided to order a dual wan router and set this wireless one up only for guest wireless connections or will send it back under warranty.
Thanks alot for your time.
Cheers

Well if your using a modem/router combo, this could be an issue as well. Some modem/routers use .1 or .0 IP addresses for there configurations. If the DIR was set up by the wizard, it should have picked a 10.0.0.# ip address for its LAN side pool.

Let us know if using any of the other IP strings doesn anything different.

The ISP's router assigns an ip like 192.168.1/ on the network. For the wan port on my dlink used an ip given my the ISP router like 192.168.1.3. For the newtork i used 192.168.5/.
I can't access the ISP's router because it is denied. I have to phone them and let them know what changes i need and they will make those changes within 24 hours. So i'm in a huge dissadvantage because i cannot conduct tests and different setups on the fly. What made me wtite and ask things is that i have several dlink routers deployed, same firmware, model, HW version and so on and same ISP with the routers but it is the only place where i have this issue.
Thanks alot for your time.
Cheers.

Can you try the 192.168.0.1 address on the router and test this?

No i can't these days because i won't manage to visit my client, maybe in the near future, 2-3 weeks. There's no rush because the network works fine and the wireless was used only by the employees (they have also mobile connections on their terminals). Anyways i'm in the middle of implementing some security policies   where the company will deny wireless connection in the offices which was mainly used by employees for personal purposes. So i dropped the ideea troubleshooting this router because wireless might be denied for good in the near future.
Thanks alot for your help.
Have a nice day.
