  I'm thinking of parting with my trusty DGL-4500 that I bought new in 2007...and still has early firmware. I realize price might be subjective...just wondering what someone has paid for similar in the past. Here's a pic of the firmware info:





  What do you guys think?

You could keep it as a back up router or use it as a 2ndary AP.

I wasn't expecting much...maybe $50. Just a little to help offset the cost of a new router.

  I was thinking about getting the Netgear Nighthawk ac1900...seems to be pretty good.

Depending on the quality.  Also, the prices fluctuate sometimes daily.

 I just had the impression they were worth a little more if they had the early firmware...as the later firmware updates kinda screwed the reliability and weren't really reversible.

Well, I've never had any issues with my 4500s accept for one build that was quickly fixed by D-Link. Other then that, most all of the FW versions were good. There was a lot of issues however after I came to the boards here, I soon learned that most of the problems stemmed from user mis-configurations or there environment and surroundings.

I've tested many versions and they all work very well and are very stable. The 4500 is still a great router minus the fact that IPv6 wasn't going to be supported and the WiFi was not simultaneous dual band like the 825 and newer model routers are now days. These were only a couple of things that some users wanted however over all, Theres only been a few newer routers that can hold a candle to this great router. Ya all the new WiFi standards are out today. The 4500 could be upgraded using AC Access points if one were still wanting to use the 4500 as a router only.

With all the newer gen routers that have arrived and the new features and bells and whistles, thats probably driving down the value of used 4500s, and has the 4500 ages, it will be still a good router, just given enough time, will eventually become out dated and not useful at some point in time.

Get what you can selling it. If you don't think you can or can't find a good home for it. Keep it and use it as a spare AP or back up in case your new fangled AZ50000000 WiFI godzillabyte router takes a dive, you'll have something to fall back on.  I still have my 3 4500s, hehe. One still in the box un-opened.

  My 4500 seems to reboot every so often... I think because of too many devices. My DSL service is at capacity in my area (they finally told me after repeated complaints)...so it's hard to tell which is the culprit. Last year some time...I followed the steps I think you posted about troubleshooting...reset to factory...turn off game fuel...etc. The router is located on the top of an 8 foot entertainment center and I need a stepladder to get to it...so I don't see it often...lol. I do see the ceiling light up bright blue sometimes when we lose connection...so I'm guessing it's rebooting?

  Don't know for sure though...it is getting long in the tooth so I was thinking of replacing it. I'm pretty sure I will be upgrading from crappy DSL that is anywhere from 6mb to 1mb depending on internet traffic in my area, to 25mb cable internet...so I was thinking I should probably get a new router to go with it.

Ya, the main reason the router rebooting like that is either a configuration issue or your ISP possibly.

Care to walk thru some troubleshooting steps to see if we can figure out whats going on?

If it's hear other electronic equipment, this could be a cause as well. Is there good ventilation there as well?

I bet we could find out whats going on...Let me know.

  I'm at work right now...but it sounds like it's worth a shot. I will have to catch up with ya when I have the wife and kids under control...lol. They are constantly online doing homework...etc.

• What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

• What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
• What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
• If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems: Link>Double NAT and How NAT Works. To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged. If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
  Example of a D-Link router configured for PPPoE with ISP Modem bridged: PPPoE Configuration on Router
• Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
• For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.
• Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Wireless Configurations

• Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
• What wireless modes are you using?
• What wireless devices do you have connected?
• Any cordless house phones?
• Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Router Placement
Forum User - "Well I feel really dumb. After moving the router away from other electronic devices my speeds are back to normal. Just a heads up for anyone experiencing slow speeds, you might want to move it away from other electronics and see if that helps."
6" minimum safe distance between devices.

 A little update Furry:

   I went ahead and pulled the trigger on new cable internet and it will be here tomorrow! My DSL connection was definitely what I suspected as being the culprit…so I will see how the router works
with the new connection before going into panic mode…lol.

   The speed package I picked will be 25mb download with 5mb up…it should be tons better than my flaky 1-6mb down and 760k up.

  I specifically chose their cable only modem with no wi-fi built in. After the installer leaves…and before I put my DGL into the equation…should I do a factory reset on it?

Kewl beans...Do you know what mfr and model the modem is? Hopefully a Motorola SB 6 series. Or you can get your own if they will let you. Give theres a try first though.

Yes, Save off your current 4500 router config to file unless you have done that already or don't care, however yes, do a full factory reset, turn off ALL other devices accept for 1 wired PC and set it from from scratch. Setup the wireless SSID and PW and leave everything else default at first for speed testing. Ask me laster about enabling GF.

3rd Party Security Software Configurations

• Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
• Turn off all devices accept for one wired LAN PC while testing.
• Disable any downloading client software managers, i.e. Torrents or similar.

Web Browser Configurations
What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8, 9, 10 or 11, set compatibility mode and test again.
Disable any security browser Add-ons like No Script and Ad-Block or configure them to allow All Pages when connected to the router.
Clear all browser caches.

Once you have it set up, run a couple of wired LAN speed tests to check and make sure your getting your paid ISP speeds. You should be.

  Not sure what brand the modem is…but they do support buying your own and the only 3 retail approved modems are Motorola SB 6's…so hopefully it comes with one.
