Youtube & torrent stops
« on: December 17, 2012, 12:12:56 PM »

Hi,

I recently purchased and installed the DIR-827 Media Router. I'm having some problems with downloading torrents and viewing videos on YouTube. This problem may also be existent on other sites but I don't know cause these are the only 2 main ones I use.

I just upgraded the firmware to v1.04 but it didn't fix the problem.

YouTube - whenever I go to load a video, it takes awhile for the video to load. Once the video starts playing, the download progress bar continues slowly for awhile and then eventually, stops maybe about a quarter in (sometimes earlier, sometimes later). When I try and skip ahead in the movie, it starts loading again from that point but most of the time, never actually finishes. As a result, I can't see a full video on YouTube.

Torrent - the torrent download starts ok and seems to get a really fast speed but about 5 mins later, it shuts down. The download stops and I lose my internet connection. I disable the radio on my computer and then re-enable it and the connection re-establishes right away. When I restart the download, same thing all over again.

Any ideas what the problem is? I'm quite sure it is something I have to change on the router but I don't know what.

Link>Welcome!
What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.

Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

Link>Wireless Installation Considerations
What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
Try setting a manual channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?

Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
Try turning off Short GI, WLAN Partition, and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

Does youtube videos play correctly if you temporarily stop the torrents?
Are you limiting how many torrents your downloading at a time?

Hi,

Sorry...I haven't had a chance to try it yet but I will. One new thing I also noticed...I found out it isn't just YouTube and Torrents. It seems to be even simple downloads...I.e., through a mailing list from a music artist, they had a free song download. I went to the site and it wasn't able to download it either (I get the sense it has something to do with how the data is transferred...I read somewhere about how the packets may be broken up too much and as a result, doesn't successfully download (I don't really understand this part...too complex for me).

Anyways, to answer some of your other questions first (I can't answer more now since I am at work and no access to the router):

ISP Service - Acanac Cable (Toronto, Ontario, Canada)
ISP Modem - Huawei MT130U V100R001C01B071 (stand-alone modem)
Router - I only have the D-Link DIR-827 (So, it isn't bridged)

Logging into Router - oddly, I can't type in the router # but I can access the router by typing in the dlinkrouter address (or whatever the address is)

Turn off QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping - how do I turn this off?

Wireless Mode - I believe it is on mixed g and n (I have to have this because my computer is only a G network card while the MAC computer has an N network card

Security - WPA

I think that's it...but yeah, I'll try to fiddle with your suggestions in the next few days and get back to you. Thanks so far for the detailed response!

Turn off QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping - how do I turn this off? After loggig in, go to Advanced/QoS.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic

Try Opera or FF? If IE 8 or 9, set compatibility mode and test again.

Keep us posted.

Hi,

Been so busy with holidays so wasn't able to go step-by-step through your suggestions. I remembered I tried some of them but it didn't do much. However, this is my latest:
- enabled wish
- I check boxed 'http' and left windows media center blank

I noticed something new - I put in another D-Link router and was able to connect to that one fine and when I downloaded on YouTube and torrents, it worked great with no problems.

I switched back to the DIR-827 router and noticed this: Youtube was still slow however, when I opened up a torrent program (Bitcomet) (without even having anything in the download queue...merely opening the program), it helped the Youtube download and it was downloading at a good speed. Even if I started downloading a torrent, the Youtube had no problems continuing.

I went out today and tried a torrent download on its own - after awhile, same problem as when I first asked for help, the download stopped. However, when I turn off the Windows firewall it seems to work fine. So, does that mean it may merely be my Windows Firewall having some conflict w/ the router settings?

Because I didn't have to turn off the firewall when I used the other router.

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using Link> teamviewer if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Also ensure that IPv6 is either disabled or set for Local Connections on the router.

The problem you had with the YouTube loading slowly and does not go that specific part of the video when you try to scroll, I have also experienced that way back even though it was not a Dlink router that I used back then. until now I still have that problem but I did not mind because I don't stream YouTube that much and I understand that this won't apply on your end (just sharing sentiments :D)

With the torrent, I believe that there could be problem with the router. This is much pretty basic when it comes to P2P but also try to check the seeders vs. leechers ratio of the torrent that you downloaded because maybe the leechers overwhelm the numbers of the seedersm, that also causes the file download to stop even though you have a good connection. I use utorrent at home and I always check the peers that are also downloading/sharing the torrent

Good Info and thanks for sharing. I do believe that the Torrent programs are really set up for maximum seeds and leechers with no regard to any sort of router capabilities, ISP Services and speeds and users fail to understand that having the Torrent programs be like this seems to really either hammer any router used on performance and handling. I sometimes torrent however when I do, it's only a couple at a time. I believe that what you say needs to be followed. I think if people doing Torrents would understand this better, there routers would give them so much problems.  ::) My 2 cents.

I actually just noticed that recently. I always blame the router/modem when problems like this arise. Let me share this, I just downloaded the movie National Treasure (Nicholas Cage) and the movie file is about 700mb. At the same time, I also downloaded the full fight card of UFC 155 (900 mb). As I checked the speed meter, it was doing good and NT is downloading fast (it only took 3 hours). But the other file (UFC) is really running slow (took almost 2 days to finish). When I compared the seeders doing the two files, there were more people seeding NT while there are more guys downloading the UFC file. And that made me understand that it when it comes to P2P, it is not always the ISP or the router that is causing the problem if the download takes a long time.

See?  ;D Ya everyone wants to place blame on the router or they have high expectations of routers should be able to handle the max. torrents users want or what the torrent program allows with no regard of the consequences and what goes on between the PC and the ISP modem.  ::)  People need to just moderate more what they download and seed then they'll get all they need in time. Ya might take a bit more time however will be less problematic in the long run.  ::)
