I currently have a DIR-825 and am pretty satisfied with it. I'm interested in an AC router since I got a new cell phone that will support it. My DIR-825 will reach my whole house, but right where I stand outside when I walk the dog signal cuts out. I'd love to get an extra 2 or 3 feet range.. so I'm hoping an AC router will do that as well as possibly giving me faster speeds.

Is this DIR-803 a pretty new router? I don't see many posts in this forum. Or should I look at one of the AC cloud routers for better support? I see more posts in those forums. I don't want cloud features. If you suggest me buying a cloud router for better support, I'd like one of the AC1750 models, but not use cloud features.

I really use not many functions on my router.. I have wireless on. I have one PC via ethernet. One cell phone via wifi. And Chromecast. Occasionally family comes over and hops on my wifi. My PC has DMZ on and I have it set to always give my devices the same IP. So, really all I need is a better version of what I have now.

Have you thought about an extender instead of a new router to help extend the range of the current routers WiFi? Something like a DAP-1320 or 1360

How far is the area where you walk ur dog out side  from the router inside?

AC mode is still best in line of site as it's on 5Ghz which is still effected by walls and building materials.

Yes the 803 is a new router.

You could use a DIR-###L series routers and just not enable the Cloud features if you wanted one of those.

If you wanted to get AC support on WiFi an not a new router, you could get the DAP-1650 and use it as a wired AP as a main host AP or to use with the current routers WiFi. Just have to make sure that the channels are different between them.

Sorry. I forgot to check my post! I was reminded of it today as I walked the dog.

Ahh.. so most likely AC won't make a difference for me since it's line of site (two or three walls between me and the back yard) so even if I do get a new router it might not help.

How much farther to where I walk the dog? like 2 feet LOL! Definitely less than 5 feet would do nicely. I can get internet on my back porch, which is two walls between me and the router.. one wall would be my bedroom if you count that (door is open), and the other wall is the back of the house, which leads to a back porch. I think I can step outside the back door (third wall), but soon as I take a step off the porch it loses connection.

What is odd, though, is how come I lose connection there, yet I can see the people's wifi connection across the street? They're probably on whatever garbage Comcast supplied them.

The reason I didn't look at an extender is because I read mixed reviews on them.

Is there any security issue adding an extender? I don't want the neighbors leeching off me. As it is now, I have my SSID not broadcasted. My Uncle came over and said he couldn't connect to my wireless and I was baffled as to why he couldn't connect.. only to find out he was searching for me instead of manually typing in my network name. So, I'm glad not broadcasting does it's job properly.

I presume then just adding and extender will help solve this issue.

What is the total distance or max distance from the current main host router that you are at when walking the dog?

As long as you have the main host WiFi secured with WPA2/AES security, you'll be fine by adding an extender. Nobody can leech off you unless you give them the PW.

Alright. Thanks for the help. I'm going to try the extender.

Not sure how soon I'll get it as Microcenter is over an hour drive for me and nobody else carries it in store, so I might have to order one. It's not totally on the top of my list right now, but I'd say soon as this month is one of those 3 paycheck months.
