Title: Same SSID names for extended network?
Post by: carsten.fich on August 10, 2017, 07:56:32 AM
I am trying to avoid having separate names for the extended network - but experience some problems on this.

The setup wizard adds new names for the extended network: "Your router’s SSID-EXT" and "Your router’s SSID-EXT5G"
I read in some posts on the internet that it is possible to overwrite these and simply give them the same names as the router wifi names.
When doing this my WiFI fails after 5-10 minutes - simply stops working. :-\

Any hints (guiding) on this?
- Is it possible at all?
- Will it work if the DAP-1620 is configured manually to use other channels (currently just setup to automatic handling)

Router: DIR-868L
Extender: DAP-1620
Hardware Version: A2
Firmware: v1.05

Welcome Back!

What FW is loaded on the DIR-868L?
What wireless modes are you using on the 868L?
What channels are you using on the 868L? Should be 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4Ghz. Any on 5Ghz.

Most extenders support same SSID name convention. Possible that in automatic mode, this model adds to the SSID so some users and admin can tell if an extender is being used.

You might give manual configuration a try and see.
I would review the user manual to see what information it may have regarding this.

Something to test, Turn OFF WPA security on the 868L temporarily and connect the DAP to either radio to see if the wireless still fails. Re-enable WPA2 after testing.

I believe that extenders have to run on the same channel and the main host router that it's connected too.

When you do work out how to change the SSIDs, think about what you are doing very carefully. The router makers adopt different SSIDs for a reason.

Many experienced wifi users caution against using the same SSIDs on the same network, unless you have wifi hardware that is designed specifically for those circumstances.

Look at it this way, you have a smartphone that you carry around the house. It sees the same SSID as you roam around, but one source is much stronger than the other. How is the device supposed to know which one to connect to if it cannot tell them apart?

Using the same wifi channel makes it even worse. Your phone could have a hissy fit as it tries to work out which wifi source to talk to.

If you do want to use the same SSID, then set it to different channels, then the mobile device has at least something to latch on to as you move around.

Why do you want to use the same SSID? If your phone is any good it will seamlessly switch from one SSID to the next without skipping a beat.

I suggest a few experiments before you lock down the system. Try it with the same SSID and different channels and check that you can move around and get what you want. If you have any problems, rethink the strategy.

I use separate SSIDs but the same password.
