home lan file sharing
« on: December 11, 2010, 05:47:15 PM »

Hello.
I have owned my DIR 615 for about 51 weeks.
HW C1
FW was upgraded about 2 months ago, per instructions from DLink tech support.

I am unable to locate my receipt so I can not return it, using DLink's RMA.

I have had intermittent problems for months.

Sometimes, it drops the wireless connection.

Today, I tried to establish file sharing.

All computers can connect to the internet
All computers note that the gateway, DNS & DHCP are 192.168.0.1
All computers can ping the router

Computer 1
Desktop, which I built
Win 2000 Pro SP4
ethernet card
ip address:  192.168.0.102
Firewall = old Zone Alarm

Computer 2
IBM Thinkpad Laptop
XP Pro SP3
Linksys WPC 100 PCMCIA wi fi adapter
ip address 192.168.0.104
Firewall = AVG Internet Security

Computer 3
Gateway Desktop
XP Home SP3
PCI Wi Fi card
ip address 192.168.0.105
Firewall = XP's FW

Computer 4
Desktop computer which I built
W7 Pro SP0
ethernet port from motherboard nVidia chipset
ip address 192.168.0.100
Firewall = AVG internet Security 9.0

Computer 5
IBM Thinkpad
built in wi fi
ip address 192.168.0.104
Firewall XP

Computer 6
Desktop computer which I built
Vista Business SP1
ethernet card
ip address 192.168.0.103
Firewall Vista's Firewall
I have enabled file & printer sharing on each computer.
Each computer has a folder C:\test_share_<computer friendly name >
Each folder that is shared contains a simple text files.
Each folder that is shared is set to be shared.

Each computer is a member of the workgroup:  WORKGROUP
When I ping from any computer to another computer, I am informed that either 4 packets sent; 4 received
OR
4 packets sent, 4 packets received, BUT the computer is unreachable

From Computer 6:
Ping 192.168.0.104  4 packets sent, 4 packets received; unreachable
Ping 192.168.0.101  4 packets sent, 4 packets received; unreachable
Ping 192.168.0.102  4 packets sent, 4 packets received
Ping 192.168.0.103  4 packets sent, 4 packets received;
Ping 192.168.0.104  4 packets sent, 4 packets received; unreachable
Ping 192.168.0.105  4 packets sent, 4 packets received; unreachable

But, in Network places, computer 1 appears

On Computer 4, the only item visible is the DIR 615
One time, briefly, the other computers appeared, but I have been unable to reproduce that result

Only computer 3 can see computer 3
Only computer 5 can see computer 5

At the present time, Computer 3 & computer 5 are turned off.
Computer1, in "my network places" can see itself, computer 2, computer 4, computer 6
The shared folder can be accessed.
Computer 2, in "my network places" can see itself, computer 1, computer 4
The shared folder can be accessed.
3 hours ago, those shared folders were not accessible.

What changed?  As far as I know, only the passage of time.

Edit #2:  The passage of time and the offline [ turned off ] state of computers 3 & 5.

Please let me know any other information that will be useful to you.

Thanks for your help.
