Firewall rules between VLANs?
« on: August 10, 2012, 06:05:17 AM »

I need a small router that can isolate a server from other locally installed computers, but allow shared access to a networked printer. VLANs provide the isolation nicely, but the printer access generally requires allowing inter-VLAN routing.  This of course negates much of the security provided by the VLAN.

It appears that the web interface of the DSR family of products provides no means for creating VLAN-toVLAN firewall rules.  The CLI documentation is not clear. Is there a way to do this?

If not, is there some other product you'd suggest?

Thanks.

I would contact DLink directly and pose this question to them. Maybe Sales. They will be able to help you out.
Let us know what they say.

Actually I had tried to contact D-Link first, but made the mistake of using the support page on their website.  My message there was ignored, and the phone number they give is for warranty or support contract issues.

After I posted here I got a phone number for pre-sales support (FYI: 1-800-326-1688, option 1).  The short answer is no, the DSR family can't do that.  I could do something similar with the DFL family, but that's beyond the budget.

The DFL's are phenominal products! You would be able to do what you want with complete grainular control. The DSR's I am very sure will not meet your requirements.
