Multiple bridges - DIR-880L and three DAP-1650
« on: July 13, 2014, 08:55:22 PM »

I am in need of setting up multiple bridges on the same home network.   I was planning on buying a DIR-880L router, and three DAP-1650.

With the hope of being able to setup all three of the DAP-1650 in bridge mode and connect to router at the same time. (assume I could assign them each their own fixed IP)

I am pretty computer savy, but cannot find much information about multiple bridges on same network.

I live in a 3 bedroom apartment, and so I cannot make permanent changes to configuration.   But kids rooms need better connection than wireless dongles for each device.

Does anybody know if this would work?

Thanks,
Steve

Link>Welcome!

You can however the connection rates between the 880L and the 1650 DAPs differ on 5Ghz.

The 1650s can only do 867Mb while the 880L can support up to 1300Mb

While we're on the topic, could someone advise on whether this is possible and if so how to set this up :-

1. ISP's NAT'd router has it's own 192. address range and is dhcp.
This is fine.

2. DIR-880L is NAT'd and has its own separate address range and receives its address from the ISP's router via a dhcp reservation on the ISP's router.
The 880L is wired and wireless and a dhcp server for it's own address space and uses dhcp relay to the ISP's router.
This is fine (it was used on a DIR-655 for a long time).

3. I have a DAP-1650, which I would like to hardwire plugin into the DIR-880L and  :-
- the 1650's 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz to have separate SSIDs to the 880L
- the 1650 be a dhcp server for its wireless clients (in addition to the 880L to stay as a dhcp server)
- the 1650 be configured with different hard-coded DNS settings (eg getflix DNS servers)
- the 1650's clients to be given dhcp addresses by the 1650 as well as it's hard-coded dns addresses
- setup static routes in the 1650 to redirect some nominated traffic to other places
- if possible, the clients of the 1650 and of the 880L to be visible to each other in a "shared" address space eg across 10.1.1.x
-- this, I do not how to do...
if something like this is possible, I could attach wireless clients to the 1650 and they'd use different DNS to anything attached to the 880L, but they'd both see each other OK by IP address since they share an address space

Well, that's the thought anyway.

I haven't done anything like this however it might be. You'd have to set up the DAP in wired AP mode and enable the DHCP server and I guess input custom DNS. The new IP address subnet should work for Internet thru the 880L however not sure if the main host NG router will effect anything. Your in a double NAT condition. Sharing across the different subnets may not be possible.

Gr8jpn:
Yes that should be fine. You can use the 880L as the "hub" and multiple DAP-1650's in mediabridge mode.

Hydra3333:
The DAP-1650 does not have a built-in DHCP server and best practice is to not have 2 DHCP servers within the same broadcast domain. You will never be assured that your device will pull an IP from the server you want.

I think I know what you are trying to accomplish but I see this as messy and unsuccessful. I don't have the whole topology but if you are just trying to get 1-2 SmartTV's/media players to have different DNS servers (ie getflix), I would just hard code them in those devices. That way the hardcoded DNS servers will supersede your routers and your ISP's DNS servers.

Long story short is it's not possible with this hardware. A medium business firewall, websmart switch, VLAN capable AP's should be able to do what you want it to do but it would end up costing a lot and the configuration may be complex.
