DIR-510L Map 2TB HDD as windows network drive
« on: August 11, 2016, 10:35:00 AM »

I find that my DIR510L works and finally has NEARLY everything I want. But it seems it is not possible to map my HDD as a network drive in Windows. This is the most important function for me and I will have to return it if it isn't possible to make it happen.
I have seen various posts in forums stating to enter this or that address in the windows file explorer address bar or in the map network drive dialogue but none of it works with the 510L.
Also there is a menu item in other routers to enable windows network drive or file sharing or something similar but this item is missing in the DIR-510L. Please no other proposals. The smartshare app constantly crashes but is useless for my purposes anyway. I am using my external drive for media in my media center and the files in my media center point to drive Z: - which i sometimes use plugged in (faster speeds) sometimes over WiFi - so I need this drive to be Z:, if plugged into my laptop or plugged into my router. Without mapping the network drive this is impossible.

Did anyone succeed in making it work or can someone give me the definite: No, DIR-510L can't do it so I can get my money back.

Thanks for any help

H/W Ver.:A1
F/W Ver.:1.03

According to the update check the firmware is up to date.

I am in Austria, Europe but bought the item on Amazon, so I am not sure if the device is the version intended for Europe (if there is such a thing - why do you ask where I am?)

Thanks in advance!

I would upgrade to v1.07 as I see there is this version available here and test to see if this helps:

Thanks for the link. Nothing changes though. In the USB storage device settings on the router homepage there are only the two options: DLNA and shareport. no windows network drive (or similar name, I don't remember,  as I have seen on screenshots of other dlink router homepages).

So I guess it is not possible.

I do not know if you work for DLINK but maybe you can point me to a router that can do the following:
2.4 + 5GHz dualband with at least the speed of the dlink dir50L
3g 4g network connecion (maybe modem built-in? or at least usb connection for modem)
at least one free usb for a 4 TB seagate HDD (requires a higher wattage than smaller usb hdd I think)
possibility to easily map a network drive from that HDD
battery powered maybe power bank
portable size and weight

as far as I looked I cannot find any router that can do that, incredibly enough because I guess anyone who wants a travel router and knows what they want, wants these functions. I would really appreciate a hint if you know any router with these specs.

Thanks so  far!

Most home class routers or travel routers don't support USB drive sizes over 1Tb, mostly 250Gb to 500Gb for travel routers. This maybe due to power drain on bigger size drives and some bigger size drives need there own power supply adapter. Also most travel needs are just that need for some storage, not a great amount of storage where that maybe placed at a home location. Most travelers may only need a small amount which the travel routers are directed too.

You might phone contact your regional D-link support office and ask them what model router they might have that supports your needs.

Is this what you have read?  This would be the closet thing to get it to work.
