Speed Issues
« on: February 03, 2014, 03:13:30 PM »

Hopefully, I can get some assistance here, as I'm having a very strange issue with my brand new DGL-5500.

Here is some information regarding my internet/devices that I use on my network:

ISP: RoadRunner Turbo 20/2

Devices:
Playstation 4
Xbox One
Wii U
2 x laptops (wireless)
2 x 3DS XLs
2 Android Phones
Kindle Fire
Desktop PC (wired)

I purchased a DGL-5500 to replace my aging DIR-655, and because I thought that StreamBoost will help alleviate some of the issues I'm having playing games, while my wife and mother-in-law are streaming video.

I followed the instructions to do initial set up, reset to factory defaults, and then downloaded and updated with the latest firmware (1.11B03). I also reset to factory defaults afterwards as well.

I go through the initial setup (all defaults) and start to add my devices. I start to add my devices to the 2.4GHz network (I was unsure which devices I owned that supported 5GHz at the time). The devices are recognized and added fine, and I start to organize my priority for the devices.

I go out to test my Playstation 4 and Xbox One, and the wireless speeds are abysmal. I'm getting 75% to 85% signal strength to both, but getting speeds approx 100kbps to 200kbps for both download and upload. The speeds are so slow, I can't even load my friends list on PS4, and video takes 5-10 minutes to buffer on the Xbox One.  I also notice that my laptop is also running ridiculously slow via wireless, as its taking forever to load 192.168.0.1, and the actual D-Link software once I actually get in.

I check the PC that's hardwired to the router, run speed test and everything is running fine. Getting close to my advertised 20/2.

I didn't want to mess with it too much as it was late, but after about an hour I went back to my DIR-655 to make sure it wasn't something else. Everything was fine with the DIR-655. Wireless speeds were excellent, signal strength was still about 75% to 85%, but everything worked perfectly.

Has anyone else experienced this? Am I overlooking a setting somewhere? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll be wanting to try things out again tonight to test some things.

Thank you!

I should also add - no cordless phones or devices near or within range of the router, the DGL-5500 is in the same location as the DIR-655 was, there are some neighboring WiFi networks, but nothing in close proximity.

**EDIT**
Ok, went back a previous version on the firmware - 1.10b04(?) - and the standard default settings, and it seems to have fixed the speed issues. Interesting.

I haven't had any slow speed issues over wireless.  You can try following the settings I posted here:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=57445.0

Which devices are on the 5ghz? Try only the N/AC devices on there.  Like the Xbox One.  N/G devices on the 2.4.

Before I reverted back to the older 1.10b04 I had actually used the settings you recommended in your thread, and I was still having the same speed issues.

Since I've been using the older firmware for the past 2-3 hours, everything has been running very smoothly. Online gaming and streaming video on both the PS4 and Xbox One has been smooth, and my speeds have been back to average with what I was getting with my old DIR-655.

I have zero devices running on 5GHz at the moment. When I was having the speed issues I also had no devices on the 5GHz network either. It really seems that whatever my speed issues were, it was related to the current beta drivers that are available.

Link>Welcome!

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • Check cable between Modem and Router, swap out to be sure. Link> Cat6 is recommended.

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz? If your not using 5Ghz at all, TURN it OFF!!!
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • Any cordless house phones?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Decided to try the v1.11B03NA firmware again - did a clean install of it, as per instructions. Same issue. Wireless speeds are significantly decreased once it is set up.

Now following FurryNutz' suggestions I did the following (testing speeds with each change):

-Changed SSID - No change
-Switched to mixed G & N on 2.4GHz, single mode N on 5GHz - No change
-Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz - No change
-Skipped setting manual channel
-Security mode set to WPA-Personal (This is what I was using already) on 2.4GHz
-Switched WPA mode to WPA Only and Cipher Type to TKIP on 2.4GHz - Wireless speeds back up

So that fixed my speed issues with the latest firmware, at least on 2.4GHz.

I'm going to try my Xbox One on 5GHz now to see if that made the difference there as well.

**EDIT**

So with just the single mode N change done on the router previously, my speeds on 5GHz have gone back up as well. My Xbox One and two Android phones are connecting just fine, with speeds back to normal.

So apparently something changed in the firmware between 1.10 and 1.11 - specifically with the items that I manually changed - that cause the wireless speeds to drop unless the changes that I made are done.

Very, very weird.

Disabled  HT20/40 Coexistence on 2.4Ghz and speeds were still normal. Whatever I changed in the WPA options (2.4GHz) fixed my speeds.

As a final test with 1.11b03 I reset my DGL-5500 to factory defaults and changed only the SSID. The result? Wireless speeds on 2.4GHz and 5GHz are super slow. Back to ~500kbps down, ~200 kbps up.

Then I changed only the settings under WPA - Set WPA Mode to WPA Only, and Cipher Type to TKIP. Wireless speeds were completely back to normal for both 2.4GHz and 5GHz networks.

So something happened/changed between 1.10 and the latest beta regarding WPA that was causing my wireless speed issues.

What modes are you currently using with WPA/TPIK only?

So WPA2/AES only is showing a drop in speed?

Just 2.4 with WPA/TPIK currently. 5GHz is set to the default settings - Auto (WPA or WPA2), and TKIP and AES

When it was set to "Auto (WPA or WPA2)", and "TKIP and AES" on 2.4GHz I was getting the drop in speed.

Strange, no?

What happens if you test WPA2 and AES only?  ???

That is odd.  I'm connected on the 5ghz right now from my PC WPA2/AES @ 866.5mbps

So seems like others are experiencing some differences here.

I'd like to have users experiencing this clarify some results by testing the following:
2.4Ghz Auto 20/40Mhz WPA2/AES Only = Speed Results

2.4Ghz Auto 20/40Mhz WPA/TPIK Only = Speed Results

2.4Ghz Auto 20/40Mhz Auto WPA/WPA2 and Auto AES/TPIK  = Speed Results

Can do either both READ and WRITE or just READ from say local file share on a LAN wired connected PC or do some Internet speed tests using speedtest.net. We prefer using local LAN wired PC method if possible.

Please disable any 3rd party security programs and browser add-ons while testing.

2.4Ghz Auto 20/40Mhz WPA2/AES Only = http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3290540619

2.4Ghz Auto 20/40Mhz WPA/TKIP Only = http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3290534900

2.4Ghz Auto 20/40Mhz Auto WPA/WPA2 and Auto AES/TKIP  = http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/3290546343

Some pretty bad weather right now in my area so my bridge can't draw my allotted 15/10, but it can be seen that with WPA/TKIP, upload speed is higher.
