It seems my 5ghz band wifi drops out intermittently.
« on: August 22, 2013, 06:03:24 PM »

Feature request:

"15. DHCP reserved IP addresses of 25 is not enough.  Would like at least 50 DHCP reserved IP addresses.  Even the D-link DIR-655 has 50."

Not only DHCP but the MAC address filtering should be expanded to at least 50. This was one of the shortcomings of the 4500 that I was hoping would be addressed with the 5500

Bug:

It seems my 5ghz band wifi drops out intermittently. The 2.4ghz band stays on, but anything connected to the 5ghz band drops and it is no longer discoverable until I reboot the router

Welcome!
  • What region are you located?
  • Has a Factory Reset been performed?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
  • What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
  • Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options, Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
  • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
  • Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.
  • Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
  • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
  • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
  • If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
  • Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
  • Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules. Enable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming for routers that have a Media Server option. Disable IPv6 Multi-cast Streaming if IPv6 or Media Server is not being used.
  • Turn off WISH, and WPS under Advanced.
  • WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed
  • Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature. Tools/Time.

Wireless Configurations
Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion
  • Ensure the default (dlink) SSID name is changed. Can be anything and not something thats already in use by any neighboring WiFi routers. Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
  • What wireless modes are you using?
  • 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz routers: Try single mode G or N or mixed G and N on 2.4Ghz and single mode N on 5Ghz?
  • Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto TPIK and AES.
  • What wireless devices do you have connected?
  • Any cordless house phones?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF or ON Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Enable WMM Enable Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.
  • Try setting Medium or Low power output settings and test again Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Honestly, most of the issues just went away so I never did anything, I will however be upgrading the firmware Monday. Haven't had a day off and it gives time for any bugs to pop up ;)

I've been having this problem from time to time with my macbook as well.  It goes out for about 60 secs or so.  I'm going to upgrade my firmware right now to see if that helps.

My 5Ghz band would drop randomly too.  I would use WiFi Analyzer on my Android and you could see the signal just disappear and come back up.  I had my HTC One and a media bridge set on that band and it would drop with both devices so I knew it was a router issue.

I originally didn't use the Streamboost automatic update option when I set up my router but since I was having that issue I thought I would add it.  I didn't notice a difference but a week later my router lost the entire 5Ghz band, while the 2.4Ghz was running fine.  I then unplugged the router to reboot it and once it came up I checked the logs and seen another Streamboost update go through.  Since then I have not had any intermittent drops of the 5Ghz band.  Not sure if D-Link had anything to do with this but my router is now working great and I'm glad I've stayed with it instead of returning it.

Do you have the Streamboost updates going to your router junior2377???

Yes I did. That very well could have been it. Dlink could have been pushing updates for it. If that's the case and a reboot is required, some sort of notification should be sent to the user, either via email or whatever, instead of just disabling part of the router until the user notices that it isn't working and reboots it.

Whatever it was, it seems much more stable now and I'm much happier.

Hopefully more features will be added in future updates.

Just FYI, SB updates differ from FW updates and SB updates don't effect any other features accept for SB.

5Ghz has been good for me as seems a bit better now with v1.10 is loaded. Range seems better some. Bit rate in my living room from where the router is back in the office, 20 ft is 54, -74, MCS 9.

Just FYI, I did some 5Ghz testing yesterday, same room 8-10 feet using my DWA-180 adapter. Initial speeds were ok, however i got a momentary disconnection message in Windows. I canceled the file xfer and re-started again, Speeds increased by 4-5MB. Not sure why speeds were not as fast when I first started. I believe something to do with Bursting had not kicked in then all of a sudden it did. Speeds were Low to mid 20MB's Write and Mid to High 20MBs for Read. I was testing isolated from internet and using a wired LAN Gb connected PC with folder shares.

I saw no other WiFi drops or disconnects after this. I'm thinking of doing some duration testing and watching a movie with a bridge attached to see what I find there. New FW seems pretty good here.

My 5GHz drops seem to be random but are noticeable when I'm streaming movies with my Linksys AC media bridge.  Last time it only happened once through the two and half hour movie.  The 5GHz signal just drops and I'm using the latest 1.11 firmware.    I also check my cell phone when this happens since it's on the AC band and it disconnects as well so it seems to affect all devices on the 5GHz band.  On the 2.4GHz I haven't noticed any drops when I'm using it on a laptop.

Furry, were you able to test this while streaming a movie?  Also I was streaming from my computer through PS3 Media Server at the time.  I do have UPNP checked as well.

I haven't streaming any movies yet over 5Ghz. I currently don't have the 5500 connected. I hope to soon though as I have testing to do.  ::)

What modes are you using on the 5ghz? Mixed or single mode?

Are you streaming to a device from another device on the LAN side or you streaming from the WAN?

Can you try setting DNS Relay OFF and manually input your ISPs default DNS IP addresses under Setup/Internet and see if this does anything?

Also streaming more than one media stream might impact some performance. Also the resolution or data that your streaming can impact as well. Streaming 1080p with 2000x2000 resolution could be hogging bandwidth...

How far away is the bridge from the 5500?

I'll put my 5500 back on line when I get a chance and see what I find with my DIR-868L in bridge mode.

What modes are you using on the 5ghz? Mixed or single mode?

I'm using single mode "AC only" on the 5GHz range.

Are you streaming to a device from another device on the LAN side or you streaming from the WAN?

I'm streaming from the WAN directly to the media bridge.  All internal network direct streaming from the DGL-5500 to a Linksys WUMC710.  I use PS3 Media Server to encode/decode the video stream.

Can you try setting DNS Relay OFF and manually input your ISPs default DNS IP addresses under Setup/Internet and see if this does anything?

I'll try set this up this weekend and see if that helps.

Also streaming more than one media stream might impact some performance. Also the resolution or data that your streaming can impact as well. Streaming 1080p with 2000x2000 resolution could be hogging bandwidth...

Only streaming one media stream at a time, besides having cell phones using the wi-fi at the same time.

How far away is the bridge from the 5500?

Less then 12ft away.  A corner of a wall is in front of the media bridge though so not a direct line of sight.

I'll put my 5500 back on line when I get a chance and see what I find with my DIR-868L in bridge mode.

I'm not going to give up on this router yet since I've had it when it first came out.  Plus the firmware updates have helped give this router potential.  I'm definitely concerned though because my previous router a Netgear WNDR4500 had no issues streaming hi-def movies over the network on it's 5GHz band "N mode" with the same wireless bridge i'm using with my D-link.
