Title: DIR-895L FORUM USER REQUESTS and BUGS
Post by: FurryNutz on January 25, 2016, 06:58:56 PM
This thread is in regards to what users would like to request DLink to review and consider adding features to the routers FW and operation. Also this thread includes any reports of bugs that are re-producible, that should be reviewed by DLink seen bythat should be reviewed by DLink seen by us users. Please be detailed, concise and tactful when posting the requests and bug details.

Do not arbitrarily post defects or bugs here. Before reporting concerns about defects or bugs, please ensure that troubleshooting of the problem has been thoroughly completed before posting a problem about defects. Not all issues are a defect or bug related. Let other users help you troubleshoot the problem first before posting here. Post your initial concerns or problems in the forums first before posting here. Many issues seen are not bugs. Inappropriate content will be removed.

Demanding anything will not get us anything. There are no guarantees.

Please keep other subjects, topics and questions to other threads and posts. This thread is just a central list of Features and Bugs for review by DLink.

If you like, you can PM me your list and details and I will add them to a list I've started here.  ;)

FEATURE REQUESTS:
Example: 1. Add router web page timeout options. (Would help to disable this when working with users in making operations in a slow manor or for those who like to keep the routers page open there browsers for a long period of time.)

BUGS:
Example: 1. At 24 MAC entries it said "You cannot add more rules because the table is full. " Need to find out if this is a defect if other rules are not set up in the pool or if there is an actual limitation on setting up the amount of MAC entries you can have.

FYI, for now AP mode is only supported on the 895L. Actual Extender mode will be forth coming in a future FW release.
Same thing for the 885L model router.

Please be patient.  D-Link is working on it.

I was unaware the DIR-895L (firmware 1.00) supported AP mode. I know it can be in router mode, but I haven't been able to put it in AP (only) mode. Regarding the repeater, I just wanted to make sure it was on the list of things to be added (aka requested functionality).

Is there a drop down menu for modes under Internet Settings?

Yes, D-Link is aware of the extender mode feature problems and is working on it.

There is not a drop down to switch modes, a la other dir (890l) models. I've verified this is, unfortunately, the same for firmware beta 1.02 build 4.

Ok so the extender switch is the mode selector then. So use wired AP mode method for now. D-Link is working on the fix. Please be patient.  ;)

The physical selector switch is only to toggle from router to repeater modes (when supported by firmware). What I'm requesting is a separate AP mode where no SPI/DHCP are being run, just the WiFi endpoints, the LAN ports are available; similar to functionality provided by the DIR-890L. I already have a pfSense firewall, I need the DIR\-895L to act as an AP only. Unless I'm mistaken and that's what the "Repeater" switch toggle will do--which seems like an incorrect name, but I digress. :-)

I don't think the 895 will have actual AP mode since it's headed to supporting extender mode.

For now, use this method: Turning a router into an AP. (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=40856.0)

BUGS: v1.11 B04
1. Reservation Limit warning still displays after disabling some reservations under the limit of 24 devices. Renaming device names still fails.
"The issue is the same on Microsoft Edge (ver 25 on Windows 10), Firefox (just downloaded current version), and Chrome (ver 52).
All three browsers report 25 total devices connected, 13 of which have IP RESERVATION enabled.  On certain devices (one Samsung tab, one Samsung phone, and a NIXPLAY device (shows pictures from the NIXPLAY cloud) I cannot rename them, enable IP RESERVATION, or even take the one out of PARENTAL CONTROL enabled status and activate it again.  In every case--trying to rename, set IP RESERVATION, or disable PARENTAL CONTROL, I get the same message: "The maximum number of permitted DHCP reservations has been exceeded."  Maybe related to having exceeded the the magic number 24 -- total devices connected, not IP reserved (which is only 13)"

3. Guest Zone not working correctly:
"One more quirk. I set up a GUEST ZONE network then disabled it.  The router continued to advertise the SSID on 5GHz, so I tried to select it from my cellphone which said it was disabled.  I resolved that issue by renaming the GUEST ZONE network, but leaving it disabled (without enabling it even for a short while.)

4. UPDATE: 10/12/2016
Seems that a wireless issue seen is due to a defect in the Broadcom chipset. Issue effects D-Link and other router Mfrs as well. All newer DIR series routers using Broadcom chip sets are effected. D-Link is working with Broadcom on this issue to correct it.

Please be patient.

FEATURE REQUESTS:
1. Wireless Repeater/Bridge mode (not just ethernet bridge)   i.e.: My primary & secondary router both are 3 band.  I would like to use one of the two 5GHz bands as a dedicated wireless repeater & then use the other two bands to transmit the normal 2.4 & 5G signals.  I currently have my primary connected to an older 1750 class router set up in media mode & sending a LAN line to my 895L in repeater mode which then transmits the wifi signal.  I would like to remove the 1750 class router from my structure.

2. AFP & NFS support (OS X users still struggle with apple's poor support of SMB)

3. Allow more IPs to be assigned with DHCP.  I have 36 network devices with smart devices included now.  Currently, another router has to manage the IPs.

Currently the 895L only supports Router mode or Extender mode, which I believe is a form of repeater. Extender mode was reported not working as intended however maybe in more recent FW updates. I don't have this model router so I don't know for sure if it works or not. D-Link routers don't have the ability to separate a radio for extender mode and the use the others in AP mode. That is not technically feasible as signals that close would not work right on the same unit. The 895L also doesn't support wireless bridge mode and I presume from it's intended design, won't in the future. The 890L, 880L and 868L support wireless bridge mode.

2. AFP & NFS support (OS X users still struggle with apple's poor support of SMB)D-Link reserves these protocols for there NAS products.

3. Allow more IPs to be assigned with DHCP.  I have 36 network devices with smart devices included now.  Currently, another router has to manage the IPs.
This as been a long time standard held by D-Link. I don't know why they don't allow for more. Seems only logical to have more since the average home gets more devices per user. The only thing I recommend when using a D-Link router and when it comes to reservations, take all of your non essential devices that doesn't need much or any router management, set input Static IP addresses ON those devices that are out side of the main host routers DHCP IP address pool 192.168.0.100 thru .200, Devices like printers, NAS, cameras, streamers, controllers and any phones or PCs. Put these out side the pool with static IP addresses. (192.168.0.2 thru .99 or 192.168.0.201 thru .254) This will free up your limited reservation pool on D-Link routers for more important devices like game consoles, phone, pads and PCs that need router management and controls. Bugs
1. Fix 5 Ghz Speed Copy File over Wireless, between router to PC, or PC to PC connected to DIR-895, that use AC wireless Adapter, Speed should be ~70-80 MB/s, but in firmware 1.12.B10, speed stuck in ~20 MB/s. Used Intel 8265 AC Mimo card, and DWA-192 USB 3.0, still ~20 MB/s.
Hope Dlink can make this potential wireless speed come out like the other Flagship Router this year, please make new firmware to fix it :)

2. Fix Speed WAN, i use 20 Mbps internet. Sometime when light out, Router restart and speed become ~9 Mbps, i should restart it 2-3 time then it become normal ~20 Mbps again. very weird.

Lets trouble shoot this one. Your the first who's reported that WAN speed testing is slow. We need to narrow this down more to figure out if this is a router problem or something else, i.e. ISP service, ISP modem or cabling. Nobody else has reported problems on the WAN side so we can't say it's a bug at this time. Please start an new thread regarding this WAN speed that your seeing.

I've had this router for over a month now & the repeater actually has worked well.  I, unfortunately, have three routers to make my network work: ASUS RT-AC3200 is my primary router, kicking out a 2.4GHz, 5GHz Low (which is dedicated to the second router), & a 5GHz high. The second router is an older RT-AC66U which runs in media mode...it dedicates the 5GHz connection with the primary router, but the 2.4 is not kicked out as a repeater, so I turned it off using SSH to cut temps & reduce interference.   Finally, the 895 connects to the 66U via LAN & is set up in repeater.  I have had zero issues, apart from the extra electricity used.

Mesh does this same thing internally.  Basically, the dedicated 5GHz line becomes the "Backhaul" & keeps the network from halfing.  Unlike my setup, it can utilize the other two bands.  (My 3200 can't act in wifi repeater, just the 66u, but that half's the speed regardless).  Because I actually use the USB 3.0 & it operates faster than the 1GB ports, I use that for my hard drive.  If I used Netgear's mesh, I would still be stuck with three devices because I would need an additional router for the USB 3.0 port.

Basically, if this router were programmed right, it could act as a mesh router: dual band with a backhaul to connect to the others.

Sounds like the Extender mode has been fixed then.

Ya, these routers are home class routers so any other features beyond that, just not really needed on them.

Glad it works for you. Thanks for posting.

Enjoy.

Most home class routers don't support this feature. Mostly seen in business or enterprise class routers.
Please add the ability to define a static route out the LAN interface.
