The rest of the functions on this router are working well to the level that I'm going through it write this post..
My issue is that once I try to change the "admin" password from blank, it refuses to let me log in again.
Actions tried include;
- Reset the router and change password to a complex password
- Reset the router again and change the password to a simple password
- Each router reset used Chrome and IE
- Multiple reboots of the router and restart of laptop
Has anyone else had this experience??

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this.
Link> Tech Support Contact Information (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?board=635.0)
We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

Thanks @FurryNutz, I'll give them a call before I pack it back up and head to Officeworks. I hoped it may have been a known issue with a simple fix, I'll let you know how it goes.

So you change the password, save, and after the router reboots does the browser refresh to the login page?
After reboot, close the browser and reopen. Also clear your browser cache.
Fact that it is happening with multiple browsers, something obviously is broken.
Do all other settings save without issues?
-
Thanks @GreenBay42, yes, I've cleared caches and deleted cookies but still no dice. The only other settings I've modified are the SSID and it's passkey but they both save without issue verified by the fact that colleagues were connecting to it automatically this morning.

I've managed to get some time to call the support line and they have run me through the usual set of Q&A and tests to conduct. The verdict being that there is something wrong with my device I'll be receiving an RMA ticket to have it replaced from the supplier.
Thanks for your time guys. 8)

Thank for letting us know. Let us know how the RMA works out for you. ;)

Happily the D-Link Support staff emailed an RMA ticket very quickly and I took that down to my nearest Officeworks who honoured the ticket and promptly exchanged the unit.
The first thing I wanted to try before going over any other config steps was to make sure that this unit didn't have the same issue saving the Admin password so I logged in, changed it and was gutted to find that I was once again unable to log in, so I started the testing again only this time I used a super simple password, one lower-case character and amazingly that worked!!
Using that same test and increasing each iteration by one character I found that after eight characters, the password field stops accepting entries and me not being a touch typist, didn't notice it until I tested it this way. I then used my original complex password, truncated to eight characters and bingo, we're secure(ish).
TLDR; DWR-921 Admin password cannot exceed 8 (eight) characters ::)

Thanks for letting us know about the replacement and the PW behavior. I would make contact with D-Link support and let them know about the max character behavior. I presume that this should not be a limitation and even though if it was intended, D-Link should put in something to prevent the PW from inhibiting access in this configuration. I'd hope they would just make the character limit higher is all.
This is something to let them know about.

What hardware revision do you have? Rev A, B, or C?
Do you have the DWR-921 or 921E?
I can see if there is beta firmware available to fix the 8 character issue.
-
Thanks for the advice guys.
@FurryNutz, it's probably not that big a security issue more than annoyance, it would have been good to know since I couldn't find anything about character limits in any other doco/mauals, maybe the password entry field at login should be modified to only accept eight characters like the configutation page does. I'll send an email to the DLink support address and let them do what they will with it.
@GreenBay42, the unit is running Rev C and I'll have to confirm but I'm pretty sure it's not the 921E. Thanks for the beta firmware offer but we don't really need a fix for this, just better, comprehensive documentation by DLink would be enough.

Discovered that the new password field only accepts the first 8 Characters
Confirmed this by typing "1234567890" logged out and used it as the password and could not login
used "12345678" and I logged in successfully
