I have a FreeNAS Server running in a small business. I need to set up FTP access for the files on it.
I have things running such that I can access the Server by FTP from a local computer. So far, so good.
Now I set up port forwarding on the DIR-130 so I can get at the Server from outside. I forward a port as follows as follows:
Name = FTP
Port = 21 (all 4 entries of.... to, from, Public, Private)
IP Address = (entered the local address for the server, same as I used for the Internal test)
Traffic Type = Any
Schedule = Always
Now I try the same scheme to test FTP but this time from outside using the IP Address that my Router shows on the WAN Status page. My FTP app can't connect. It shows "connection timed out", "Can't connect to Server".
Suggestions?

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.

What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?
Has a Factory Reset been performed?
What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values (http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=53008.0)
For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS (http://vonage.nmhoy.net/qos.html) or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) under Setup/Internet/Manual.

Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
If IPv6 is an option on the router, select Local Connection Only or Disable IPv6 options under Setup/IPv6.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.

Regarding your list of things to try..... Virtually all of them are either as you indicate, or there is no such entry.
So, Still stuck.
Firmware is the latest; 1.23

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?

I think you'll need a different router so you can configure PF for using FTP applications. I recommend a DIR 6 series if your only needed 2.4Ghz WiFi, if you want 5Ghz Wifi, then a DIR 8 series has both 2.4 and 5Ghz radios and better features for configuring ports and such for FTP applications.

The router I have from D-Link is advertised to do all of what I require.
Assuming the router is at fault (and I'm not 100% sure that is the case), why would I reward this company by buying yet a second router & trying that one!

I recommend phone contacting D-Link support, ask for level 2 or higher support. This could me a configuration issue or a HW issue.
