I am planning to have RAID-1 with 2 Western Digital Green 1.5TB WD15EADS on my new DNS-323?  Will it work?  I have another DNS-323 (RAID-1) running with 2 Western Digital Green 1TB and it works fine.

I purchased a DNS-323 (from Newegg) a couple of weeks ago along with two 1.5Tb drives.

I swear, I can't remember why now, but... even though I wanted to go with W.D.'s 1.5Tb "Green" drives, I chose instead to go with the Seagate ST31500341AS. (Yes, even though they had been thoroughly bashed --and, rightly so-- in recent months due to firmware issues, I decided the problem had been resolved.) I can't remember why I chose to pass on W.D., but I ~had~ a good reason... I know that doesn't really help; I'm sorry. I will post again if I ever remember "why".

FYI: Upon receipt, I immediately flashed the DNS-323's firmware from v1.05 to 1.07 (and am considering playing with v1.08b and even going from EXT2 to EXT3). I installed the drives in RAID-1 and, though I have pushed data back and forth for burn-in testing, I've actually done very little otherwise. Still working on the (Linux) learning curve. But, so far? Rock solid.

Tip: Peruse Newegg's customer reviews on the DNS-323 and available 1.5Tb drives, with a grain of salt, of course... you may find something to sway you decision.

Thanks for the info.  I was trying to steer away from seagate due the recent bad raps about the reliability.  Also, I have the 1TB WD green working fine with DNS-323 so that's why I wanted to stay with WD.  Do the seagate HDDs run hot?  My WD green 1TB HDDs go up 113F when busy and 102F when standby (DNS-323 temperature).

Yeah, I understand your reasoning. I was, at first, very skeptical of going with Seagate... but, I got over it after several weeks of research. I've been working w/ HDDs since 'the beginning'. (Really.) But, I'm still new to this this NAS... still learning my way around it's Linux-ness. And, even though I'm new here, I already appreciate the folks on this board. The community interest and support for this device is the main reason I bought one.

Regarding heat, the fan in my DNS-323 rarely runs. Very rarely. Mine currently idles at 95°(F)/35°(C)... that's very low and w/o the fan running. After an hour or more of continuous disk activity, it ultimately reaches 113°(F)/45°(C)... still comparably low; the fan ~finally~ kicks in at this point; and, w/i five minutes, the temp begins to drop. (Still, I'm gonna keep an eye on this.) I'll tune it down to a lower threshold, soon... maybe today. I'm running firmware v1.07 and have no fan control; but, v1.08b claims... "30. Change fan speed design, Shut off fan at desired temp (ability to check always on low, Add always on.)." So, I'd say my experience has been exceptional.

Also, I've read that, out here in the real world, these Seagates actually run a couple of degrees cooler (i.e., during disk activity) than their W.D. counterparts.

we just picked up the dns-323 about 3 months or so ago, and less than a week ago dropped in  one of the new green 1.5TB "westies", well, this morning i get up and hear the dreaded "click of doom©" coming from the 1.5. pulled the drive and it was HOT as in near-burn fingers. not sure weather it was incompatibilities or just a bum drive. going to shop where i grabbed it and getting a replacement. with the westie green 1TB drive, no problem.

It looks like I should stay away from 1.5TB WD green...  But some people are still experiencing stuttering after the firmware upgrade.

I'm running one WD20EADS and one WD20EARS with no issues.  The EARS came as a replacement after one of my EADS failed.  Apparently, WD does not offer the EADS as a replacement.

No issues for almost a year now on the EARS and no issues for the EADS for a few years.
