Title: Unable to access DNR-202L after firmware to v2.04
Post by: JChan on May 12, 2017, 01:37:42 PM
After contacting email support, I decided to hopefully search for an answer in these forums. Email support suggested that I call into tech support, but after 27 mins on hold, I gave up.

I have a WNR-202L, purchased as a recorder for 2x DCS-934L cameras. The cameras installed and are working as designed.  I access them through the MyDlink portal. The firmware on the cameras is also updated.

The issue begins with the firmware update to v2.04 for the WNR-202L. Since I am unable to bypass the MyDlink update message on the portal, I had to update. The update process seems successful. However, after the update, the recorder blinks blue several times, then goes to a solid red circle before rebooting. They cycle repeats continously. DNR-202L Setup Wizard scans continuously for the device but fails every time.

Here are some steps I've taken to troubleshoot.

1. Tried two different OS. Windows 10 and Mac OS Sierra.
2. Tried to reset as suggested. Light blinks blue, then solid red ring.
3. Tried a different HD. Also tried without HD attached.
4. Tried a different network.
5. Tried to manually reinstall firmware using USB drive. Used
instructions on D-Link website. The process did not seem complete?

I also referenced this post:

I'm sorry you are having trouble with this process and thanks for letting me know where you are getting stuck. I seems you are releasing the scan bottom too soon... so try this...

Ensure your DNR is OFF, once you have connected the USB stick containing the new firmware with the .bin file renamed to update.bin on the HDD1 port of the DNR-202L, then follow the steps below:

1. Press and hold the SCAN button and then connect the power back to the unit. (don't let go of the SCAN button)
2. Keep holding the SCAN button until the LED ring is blinking red (this may take some time, as the unit starts up it's normal boot up sequence), you'll heard two beeps (one long and one short), keep holding the scan button until the LED ring is blinking red. Let go of the scan button (upgrade process has started)
3. Wait until you hear two short beeps (at least 3 minutes...) which means the upgrade process has ended. (LED light will be solid blue again)
4. REBOOT the unit by unplugging and reconnecting the power.

after the reboot, you will be able to find it on your network when using the latest installation wizard.

Give it a run and let us know.

I'm still having this issue. So, I took it a step further and ordered another unit from Amazon. The device arrived with v2.02. I really did not want to update the firmware for fear of another brick. But since I'm not able to access it via MyDlink without updating, I took the chance. Same thing happened.

What troubleshooting step did I miss? This occurred on two different recorders.

Can you log directly into the device and not mydlink.com?
If so, do the f/w update there

I performed my FW update thru the UI using IE11. I recommend a factory reset, manually load the FW file, then factory reset then set up from scratch.

Be sure the DNR is connected to the main host router and has a reserved IP address set ON the router or set a static IP address, like .202 ON the DNR if you can access the DNRs UI.

Unfortunately, at this point, I can't find either DNR on the network. I needed to be able to access the recorder outside of our network, hence the reliance on the the Dlink Portal.  I also wasn't aware that you could access the device directly. I just went with the included directions.

I will try the DNR on a small dedicated network. Maybe something else is blocking it. Until then, any other suggestions are welcomed.

The blinking red light should only mean no network detected.

Try a different network cable also?

Which router?

Are you at the DNR locally or away?

So it's been a few weeks. I had to walk away from this frustrating issue.

Re-examining the situation now. This setup is now on my desk in front of me.

I've returned the 2nd unit to Amazon since that was still within the return policy.

1. I am using another Mac with the latest Sierra update.
2. I bought a new router to test this. (Asus AC1300) It is not connected to the internet.
3. Two devices on the network, so nothing could be conflicting with them. (DNR and Mac)
4. Reset the DNR-202L. Light blinks blue, then a solid red ring.
5. I'm not able to connect to the device via IP address that is assigned by the router. Chrome comes back with a "site took too long to respond". This is after I power on the DNR and ass well as letting it sit for a minute. It won't sit any longer because it reboots on its own.
6. Tried to update the firmware again with a USB drive, but I don't believe it is taking the update. The light keeps blinking blue until I let go. Then it blinks red once or twice and goes to a solid red. There was a recommendation to connect directly to the DNR before updating, but getting a connection is an issue.
7. As an alternative to holding down the button, I also taped the button down and let it go for 20+ minutes. Same thing happened after I released the button.
8. Tested with multiple different USB drives in case that was the issue.
9. Tested with three different network cables, not including the one shipped from the manufacturer.
10. I've also tried to use the DNR-202L Setup Wizard. As expected, it did not find the device.

Any other suggestions? Because I hate to have to sit on the phone with tech support and get dropped again after a transfer. :)

Try using Safari or FF to connect to the DNR?

After a factory reset, you should be able to access the DNRs web page at the give IP address from the router.

Post some pics of your setup. How the Dnr and router are connected.

You are able to access the router web pages?

Can you Ping the DNR-202L?
Title: Re: Unable to access DNR-202L after firmware to v2.04

Can you ping the DNR-202L?  (Open Network Utility, click Ping. Enter the IP address of the DNR-202L and click ping).

Ping times out. However, the router does see the recorder for a brief period of time. Enough to assign it an IP address. Basically, by the time I can get terminal up to ping, the recorder emits an annoyingly loud beep and reboots. This cycles repeatedly.

Unfortunately it sounds like it is defective. Contact tech support for options/RMA, and reference this forum post if needed.

My last thing I'd try - have you Tried without the USB drive?

Bamoh had issues with his dnr 202l - not being able to use a WD ultra passport drive for whatever reason.  He ended up returning his DNR202L and the next one worked.  I don't remember the symptoms he had.

I have bought 4 dnr202l, and never had a problem with a WD ultra passport drive (3 and 4TB). (I have not tried the new style you have there).  I think I got all mine from newegg.

Oh - and the one you returned - you didn't even bother to open it?

5. Tried to manually reinstall firmware using USB drive. Used
instructions on D-Link website. The process did not seem complete?

after the reboot, you will be able to find it on your network when using the latest installation wizard.

That sounds like this (except this has pictures).

Are you sure you have the right power adapters in the right devices?

Asus has used both right angle and straight.  My RT-N65R uses a straight, my newer RT-AC3200 uses a right angle.
The DNR 202L I have here uses a straight plug.  (I think we had discussion here were the DNR202L also had a right angle plug also, maybe h/w A/B revision.)

Both of my router eletrical wires are wrapped in a single casing.  My DNR202l is not, it's in 2 separate strands combined, like the one coming out of your router, and it has white dash markings on it.  It looks like almost the same wire on each of your devices.

Pretty sure. The DLink adapter has it's branding on it.

I am attempting to use a Seagate drive. I have also tried a different drive (Lacie) and a USB thumb drive.

As for the one I returned, I did attempt to set it up. But after the firmware update, I encountered the same issue. After a few tries to reload the firmware, I boxed it up and returned it while I'm still within the return date.

Yes, that's the page I found early on. My thumb did get pretty sore after a while. I also tried to tape the button down so I don't have to hold it down for long periods of time.

So both units worked until you updated the firmware?

You may want to re-download the firmware file. Maybe the one you have is corrupt. I STRONGLY suggest updating the firmware via Ethernet connection. If you did it wirelessly possible data loss could have corrupted the firmware.

Be sure to use IE11 or FF browsers for updating any FW. Disable any PC security software temporarily on LAN wired PC connected to the router. Do a factory reset on the DNR if needed, skip any set up wizards if possible, then go in and manually load the FW file, after it loads and processed, do one more factory reset then set up from scratch and use the set up wizard to set it up. Should work well.

That's correct. Both units went out after updating the firmware. I could not access recorder via ethernet after the firmware. Both recorders were updated via ethernet connection. One was through the DLink software and the other was through the Dlink Cloud. Unfortunately, after that, I was not able to access them again.

Thank You, everyone, for your time and effort. I gave up the battle and called D-Link Tech support. After troubleshooting over the phone, RMA has been issued and the recorder is on its way back to be repaired/refurbished.

Be sure your using IE11 or FF when updating FW and have any PC security software disabled before sending the FW file. Follow the processes seen on the DNRs web page. Ive updated mine twice and had no issues.

Hope the RMA unit comes with v2.04 already loaded.

I just got another DNR-202L H/W A2 from Newegg and upgraded it from F/W 2.02 from 2015 to the latest 2.04.03 (July 2016) without issue in IE11 on Win7.
This would prove the zip file online is not corrupt, and my unzip through windows explorer works fine too.
