UPnP AV SErver Not working
« on: March 02, 2009, 07:33:43 PM »

Ok here is the point...

I have 2 roommates, nice people we like to watch movies, tv shows, listen to music.. the usual..

We have an Xbox 360 and a PS3.. so we started to use windows media player to stream our video and audio files and share our music on iTunes..

We wanted a central place to store our stuff so that we could all watch/listen to anything we want at any time, mainly to stream video on the xbox 360 or PS3..

I got a DNS-323.. got it home.. places a 1Terabit Seagate SATA drive in it.

logged on to my router and figured out the IP address of the DNS-323.. logged onto the DNS-323 and checked for firmware updates.. updated the firmware to 1.06.

Ran the setup wizard after the firmware update from the web interface, and formatted my drive as a single drive..

Shared the Volume_1 folder as ready/write..

used the easy find utility to mount the drive as Z: drive on my windows box and installed the BT client.

I uploaded 5 videos and audio files.. Booted up my xbox 360 and was able to connect to the DNS-323 and watch everything ok.

I then uploaded the rest of my 500GB of stuff...

ok now here is the problem.. before the DNS-323 all my stuff worked just fine from windows media player streaming to the xbox or PS3..  but after I have the media on the DND-323 it stopped working.. how you might ask..

Well.. there are no files listed as shared.. so I restarted the device and disable then enabled UPnP..  Some of the files and folders appeared.. but I could now only stream like 1 files.. no other files worked.. even the other 4 I uploaded the first place didn’t work..

What am I doing wrong? why will this just not work…

I called Dlink and they walked me through checking my DLINK router over and confirming security setting..

Dlink said “its a bug” and told me to wait for firmware... but then if its a bug would I be the only one with this issue..?  P.s.  I was testing with AVI, MP4, and divx files.. all files worked fine before…

What am I missing is there anything I can try more?  and is anyone else having this issue or issues streaming to xbox 360 using upnp...?

If files are not showing up in one of your media folders, check to make sure that none of the filenames in that folder have a '&' in it.  If it does, remove it.  Do this for all media files.

Steps to do try out:
1) Power down xbox/ps3
2) Reset the DNS-323 to Factory Defaults
3) Go to UPnP AV section, enable UPnP AV, set media share folder
4) Save settings
5) Refresh UPnP AV list
6) Power on xbox/ps3 and see if media list comes/plays

First off I don't see any file folders.. so forget the files there are no even folders..

when I disable then enable upnp I sometimes can see some files and folders but they don't work (can't be plaid)

second those steps you just ask me to do i did on my own and with DLink support over the phone..

unfortunately its still not working..

What I would expect to see is my folder structure my files and that the files that I tested DNS 323 with originally, would still work at least..  this is not the case.. the originl 5 files I tested with don't show or don't work..

After preforming the resetup I don't even see any files or folders

After upgrading to firmware ver 1.06, did you perform a "Reset to Defaults" on the DNS-323?  If not, I would suggest doing that now, then starting over with the UPnP server setup.  With SOHO/home-grade networking devices, it's best to do an NVRAM reset both before AND after upgrading to a new firmware.

Secondly, if it worked with 5 files, then stopped working after adding in the in ~500GB of files, then chances are you have some files somewhere in that 500GB that're the cause of the problem.  I would suggest adding a little at a time (e.g. add in the T.V. shows, test, add in movies, test, add in music, test, etc.).

I did the firmware update before I did the setup.. and then reset everything to factory and re setup everything again with D Link on the phone..

Second I tried to add one folder with 10 files and it didn't work then I tried the original 5 by them selves again.. still didn't work.. it seems like it works randomly...

Try this...sorry if you may have already tried this but it's worth a little troubleshooting.

1) Create a folder on one of your volumes called Test
2) Transfer 1 video file that you know the 360 is compatible with
3) Reset the DNS-323 to Factory Defaults
4) Enable the UPnP AV
5) Set the share folder by Browsing to the Test folder
6) Save Settings
7) Refresh List
8) Turn on 360 and see if the file shows up/plays

I did that I but even when to the extreme of resetting the unit to factory settings and then resetting my Xbox.. what happened was that when I went to brows by folder nothing was there - the xbox displayed "no folder or files", then when I went to brows by video I was able to see some content but none of it worked and these files have worked before..

If someone has about 500GB or more of stuff(music, pic, video, etc) and folder structure on there 323 on firmware 1.06 please let me know as I then might think of returning the unit as defective for another.. if no one has this working please let me know..

Are you running your network on 192.168.1.x?  There is a know bug with the
UPnP server which requires this network address schema.

Honestly I have never heard or can not think why that would be the issue but I have not tried that, so I will the onlything that will kinda bug me is that I will have to make new IP reservation..

I am currently using 192.168.0.X and I will try the range of 192.168.1.X and post the results tonight..

Also, when I was using the DNS-323's built-in UPnP server, it used to take up to two hours after adding files and performing a refresh on the DNS-323 web GUI before the new files would show up on the 360.

I personaly have about 400Gb (over 1200 files and 500 folders)of movies and TV Shows on my DNS-323 and i have no issues sharing them with 2 xbox360 - one connected with a wire and and the other via wireless....

the following is my folder structure
Volume_1\Movies\MovieName\Moviename.avi
A "MovieName" folder can contain 1 or more .AVI

99.9% of all my videos are DivX or Xvid (might have a couple of MPG or WMV)

The Folder "Movies" is the one selected in the UPnP Settings

If I add any new movies or rename the folders
I just have to click on the "refresh" button on the DNS-323 GUI, and let complete to 100%
To see the update on the 360....

Well, I have about 22,000 music files, 600 video files and 2,200 photos, and it used to take about 30-35min. for a full refresh and another 1-2hrs for them to finally show up on the 360.  So, if this person has a lot of files, I'd say, "be patient."

Ok so I re setup my whole home network to use the 192.168.1.1 network..  I have over 13 devices that half of them are on static IP addresses so I had to list them and there MAC and then enter them all manually then make DNS changes..

Moral of story was I re setup everything and started to transfer the files.. Everything started to work.. So I was so happy.

So with everything working I decided to organize my folders.. Moving my files around and consolidating my folder structure.. for example my two roommates moved up their movie collection so I hade the folders movies, movies1, and movies2 (all the files working in the individual folders)  I then moved all the movies into the first movies folder and deleted the movie1 and movies2 folders.

Checked on my xbox and PS3.. The upnp still showed these folders.. So I think it’s just not updating the upnp structure, as I just read it may take some time.. I have about 700Gig of stuff so I am giving it till morning and will update the post.. Is there no other way to speed up the upnp update and will the hard drive sleep after 10 min cause a problem as it’s a default setting of the unit?
