DIR-865L 2.4GHZ channels occasionally freeze/hang
« on: February 02, 2014, 06:19:18 AM »

I have a wireless network consisting of:
hardware:
dir-865L
Hardware: A1
Firmware: 1.05

configuration
-all wifi WPA2, AES 802.11n
- several DAP-1522's configured to us the 5GHZ channel, ssid hidden
- one 2.4GHZ channel SSID hidden and used by a variety of OS's and portable devices.
- guest 2.4GHZ channel SSID broadcast and used by a variety of OS's and portable devices.
- guest 5GHZ channel disabled.
- subnets are segmented.
- two VOIPO lines and Q priorities set for each line.
- DNS relay on
- multicast on IPV4 and IPV6.

other characteristics:
- 2.4 GHZ wireless telephones throughout the house.

Everything works fine 99% of the time.

However, sometimes a frequent as once a week, while using the WIFI network via any one of the DAP-1522's, connected via the 5GHZ channel, the devices on either of the 2.4GHZ will have the following behavior.
-If the are on and in use. that is an IP address is assigned. They continue to work without issue.
-However, any device on 2.4GHZ channels trying to acquire or renew an IP address will fail to do so and basically have the appearance of hanging. The DIR-865L log shows messages of the OS repeatedly requesting an IP address.

However, other OS's that are connected to the network via the DAP-1522's 5GHZ channel, working without incident.

I have to log into the DIR-865L and reboot it. Then all is fine for a period of time. Sometimes it happens again in a week and sometime it can go much longer. But always, the solution is the same. Reboot the DIR-865L. When this happens, the wireless telephones, may or may not have been in use.

Other points of interest:
-Where I am located there are a lot of other wireless networks in the 2.4 GHZ range. Little to none in the 5GHZ range. It is why I put in the DAP-1522's.
-Most of the devices connected to the DAP-1522's are gaming devices that do not support 802.11n.
-File servers connect to the network via the DAP-1522's.
-Originally I had a DIR-655 which only has 2.4GHZ WIFI. Same thing would happen once in a while.

Thoughts, ideas.

Link>Welcome!

Links>Wireless Installation Considerations and Managing Signal Congestion and Good Neighbour Policy

  • Try setting a manual Channel to a open or unused channel. 1, 6 or 11. 11 for single mode N if the channel is clear.
  • Any 2.4Ghz cordless house phones?
  • Any other WiFi routers in the area? Link> Use InSSIDer to find out. How many?
  • If you have any of these options, Try turning OFF Short GI, WLAN Partition, HT 20/40 Co-exhistance and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Recommended settings are default. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

If this happened before on the DIR-655, then I presume this is a environmental issue here dealing with other WiFi neighbors.
