855L no DNS resolution
« on: June 18, 2015, 01:24:29 PM »

I bought a brand new DIR 855L from Newegg. Hardware version 1.0, firmware 1.03

Wireless works flawlessly, wired ethernet does not. Windows troubleshooting says my PC is configured correctly but the 'resource' or 'DNS' is not responding. I can ping my router, but ping nothing beyond that. At first, I could access the internet for a while before it would drop completely. On other days, it would load web pages but not load images (so it was loading cached pages? Youtube would load only the first 2-5 seconds of a video and then stop). When I updated the out of box firmware from 1.0 to 1.03 (I had to transfer the file from another PC while mine was offline), it came back on at full speed (speedtest.net showed around 40Mbps download) for about 10 minutes, then dropped. Both PC and router settings are as default as they get (not trying to modify an environment that doesn't work to begin with)

All of this rules out hardware issues and points directly at Dlink software/firmware. I would love some help, I'm on the verge of returning the product.
Thanks

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?
  • Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?
  Link> >FW Update Process
  • Was the router working before any firmware updates?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Router and Wired Configurations
Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router. Besure to log into the Admin account on the router.
  • Turn off TrueGigaBit Routing under Setup/Internet/Manual for those routers that have this feature for testing.
    • Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
    • Enable or Disable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers) and test under Setup/Internet/Manual. Disable may help with speed performance on higher speed ISP services.
    • Turn off DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench and input new DNS addresses under Setup/Internet/Manual.
    • Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting and maintain consistency for applications that need to connect as well as mapped drives.
    • Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.

PC 3rd Party Security Software Configurations
  • Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.

Swap cables between the PC and router to test. CAT6 is recommended. Test with a different wired PC to see if the problem follows if possible...[/list]

I am in Omaha, NE.
I factory reset when the issue first happened (before firmware updates). When that didn't resolve it, I sought out the updated firmware.
The router worked intermittently, like I said, for either a few minutes at full speed or hardly at all. 95% of the time it does not work at all.
I use Cox Cable at 50Mbps
My modem is a Motorola SB6180 DOCSIS 3.0 provided by Cox. I did not have this issue before using the new DLink router.

I will try the troubleshooting steps provided, but after reviewing the forums here it seems the DIR 855L is a defective product and I will have to act on that.

Ok, please give some of the suggestions a try.

Let us know...I know that one user regverted back to 1.00 FW and it resolved his issue. If any of the suggestions don't work, you could try this.

Keep us posted.

I turned off TrueGigabit Routing as my first troubleshooting step and have been online successfully for about 24 hours. I've got a continuous ping going and we'll see if it holds up. Thank you for your recommendation. I will allow time to progress and keep this topic updated.

Just wanted to conclude that this still works! I've been using this router for two years now and recently gave it a factory reset. The issue came back, so I referred to this forum as a reminder and switched off True Gigabit routing. No idea why that would cause such heavy issues with a device in its "out of box" state, but as long as the resolution is in place I'm happy. Thanks!

Glad it's still working two years later.  ;) Thanks for coming back and posting. Visit again sometime.
