Title: Dell XPS 13 crashes router when website filters used (1.01 and 1.02b13)
Post by: theduser on March 05, 2015, 08:41:59 AM
I've replicated this with both the official 1.01 and 1.02b13 firmware.  The router was factory reset after both firmware versions were flashed, and all settings were redone from scratch.

- Canada
- QoS was not touched (I read the related thread).
- HTTPS server and CAPTCHA was enabled
- remote admin disabled
- transmit power on both radios were tried at both High (default) and Medium
- custom SSID and WPA2 keys (I've tried different values also)
- the XPS 13 is running Windows 8.1 x64
- the router is fine with the XPS 13 as long as no website filter is added after the factory reset
- the router was previously fine with a Dell Latitude 5430 using a "Dell 1540 802.11a/g/n" under Windows 7 at 2.4GHz and website filters enabled
- an android phone has no issue connecting with the router @ 5GHz under any configuration - until the XPS 13 is brought online
- removing the website filters (i.e. no sites are blocked) allows all devices to connect without causing the router to crash

Any suggestions on how to track the cause of this down?

[edit] this is the Dell XPS 13 (9343) that came out at the start of 2015.  It is equipped with a "Dell Wireless 1560 802.11ac" adapter.

Additional information:
- IPv4 SPI is enabled
- anti-spoof checking is enabled
- Under firmware 1.02b13 disabling the 5GHz radio allows the router to operate with website filters enabled (the 2.4GHz radio is in 802.11n only mode).
- Similarly, enabling both radios, but only connecting the XPS 13 to the 2.4GHz radio works with filters enabled.
- I've noticed that the UI sometimes behaves oddly while attempting to save the website deny list - e.g. hitting save will occasionally display a never-ending "saving" dialog.  Refreshing the browser will then reveal the save was never completed.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

Can you provide how the Web Site filters are configured?

What is the Mfr and model # of the Wireless and wired LAN cable adapter o the Dell XPS 13?

Additional information:
- connecting to the 2.4GHz radio from the XPS 13 also causes the router to crash when a website deny filter is present.

With respect, many of these questions are irrelevant given that the router has been working for months before the XPS 13 was introduced.  Having said that:

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
A: Rogers cable

A: Cisco DPC3825 (in bridge mode)

Can you provide how the Web Site filters are configured?
A: A single deny filter is all that's needed - "intellitxt.com" (without quotes) was one I tried just now with the same result

A: There is a desktop connected via wired connection, but it is only affected when the router crashes (i.e. when the XPS 13 connects to the router)

A: This was not necessary before the introduction of the XPS-13, and I'd like to reduce the number of variables while trying to isolate the problem.

What is the Mfr and model # of the Wireless and wired LAN cable adapter o the Dell XPS 13?
A: There is no wired connection on the XPS 13
A: The wireless connection is provided by a Dell 1560 (looks to be a rebadged Broadcom judging by the driver info)

A: It's a Dell branded adapter

PC 3rd Party Security Software Configurations
A: Only Microsoft defender and firewall is installed.

A: Not sure how relevant given that the wired PC has always been fine.  The only other wireless device is the android phone - which has no issues connecting, regardless of configuration.

A: Not used

Pending as I wanted to respond to the above:

After reading this, I'm not sure what you're suggesting I try?  DNS relay is enabled by default, and I have tried reconfiguring the DNS servers on the router to use google's and OpenDNS with no change in behaviour.

[edit]

Additional information:
- under 1.01, removing the deny filter allows all devices to connect without issue.
- no change regardless of what DNS servers are used (rogers, openDNS or google)
- confirmed latest available Dell driver is installed for the XPS 13

With a single entry in the website deny filter:
- tried disabling DNS relay = router crashes when XPS 13 connects
- disabled all other wireless connections = router crashes when XPS 13 connects

With no entry in the website deny filter, all devices are able connect - regardless of other setting changes.

Is there a model # listed anywhere under Device Manger for this adapter?

I can only presume that there is a compatibility issue with the adapter driver and the FW on this model router and how it handles web filtering. If other devices do not exhibit this problem, then I presume that D-Link support needs to be contacted. I don't have my 880L online at the moment to confirm as it's on it way back to me from testing else where. I'll recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for level 2 or higher support since this can't be resolved by level 1 or here in the forums.

Please let us know what they say.

It's a "Dell Wireless 1560 802.11ac".  The latest driver listed on Dell's site is the same one that came with the laptop (Version 6.30.223.227, A00).

I've tried a repair install with no change.

I've also tried setting both radios to 802.11n with no change.

I'll try calling support up, but previous experience has not been good.

Tried online agent, who suggested I email support.  No response 24 hours later.

Anyhow, the original post has been updated to note that connecting the XPS 13 to the 2.4GHz radio works fine (under 1.02b13).  The crash only occurs after connecting to the 5GHz radio when website deny filters are enabled.

This is less than ideal of course, as I'm effectively using this as a 802.11n router.  I may as well dig up the old DIR-655 and put that back into service.

Phone support is preferred over online or email for better and more immediate results. This seems to need level 2 or higher support anyways.

Let us know if the same problem happens on the 655. What Rev model is the 655 and what FW is currently loaded on it?

Phone support didn't get me very far as they are unable to take bug reports.  Instead, they gave me a case number, and I've submitted a request for RMA.

My guess is that this is a firmware issue, not a hardware issue, but let's see what happens.

Oh, and the XPS-13 has no issue with the DIR-655.  No great surprise considering it's a 2.4GHz only 802.11n device.  For reference, it is HW revision A2 running 1.37NA firmware.

Maybe a FW issue with the Wireless adapter as well.

Keep us posted...If the next one does the same thing, maybe we can gather some wireshark data between the wireless card and router to submit to D-Link to see where the problem is.

To close this off, an email to D-Link support resulted in them calling me.  They provided a beta 1.03 firmware that resolves the issue (though I cannot share it).  If you are having the same problem, contact support and provide them the link to this topic.  8)

Glad they got it working for you.

WIll keep an eye out for the next FW update.

Thank you for giving feed back.

Enjoy.  ;)
