Title: Certain websites are really slow
Post by: kingeryck on April 10, 2012, 04:18:23 PM
When I connect through my router, GMail, Livejournal, Yahoo and Facebook and some other sites are really slow, especially Google and Livejournal. If I connect directly to the modem, they are fine.  I've reset the modem to factory and it's still slow on both my Vista PC connected with a cable and my GF's Macbook on wifi. I clear the cookies regularly, use CCleaner, scanned for adware, viruses. What do I do?

What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under router.
What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?
Are you wired or wireless connected to the router?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?
If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.

Some things to try:
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking.

What wireless modes are you using? Under Setup/Wireless/Manual.
Try single mode G or mixed G and N?
Channel Width set for Auto 20/40Mhz or try 20Mhz only.
What security mode are you using? Preferred security is WPA-Personal. WPA2/AES Only. Some WiFi adapters don't support AES, so you might want to try TPIK only or Auto.
What wireless devices do you have connected?
Any cordless house phones?
Any other WiFi routers in the area? Use InSSIDer (http://www.metageek.net/) to find out.
Turn off Short GI, WLAN Partition and Extra Wireless Protection if you have it. Under Advanced/Advanced Wireless.

Turn off all anti virus and firewall programs on PC while testing. 3rd party firewalls are not generally needed when using routers as they are effective on blocking malicious inbound traffic.
Turn off all devices accept for one wired PC while testing.

HW ver: A1
Firmware: 1.02NA
Massachusetts, USA
My PC is wired, laptop is wireless

Comcast cable
Telephone/internet modem, no built in router that I know of
Not sure what model I'd have to unhook everything to be able to turn it upside down it's wedged under a shelf

Mixed 802.11n and 802.11g wireless
Channel width 20Mhz
WPA personal

iphone, ipod, macbook, ps3
cordless phone is never used
several other wifi networks, apartment complex

I made the changes you suggested. It's hard to say immediately if it's working or not since it's not a working/not working at all problem.

How many other "several" other networks are in your apt complex? This can be a point of contention as many other Wifi networks near by can effect your router.

Nah it's still slow.

At least 5 others.

If you turn off the wifi and test a wired PC to the router is the Internet still slow?

When I wired the PC directly to the modem it seemed much faster. I didn't test it for long, I was on the phone w/ Comcast but there was definitely a difference.

How about wired to the router with WiFi radio OFF?

Maybe someone can review your router settings with you using teamviewer (http://www.teamviewer.com) if your interested. Its safe and secure.

Comcast. I can't see the model number on the modem, but the WAN IP is 75.68.15.230. The LAN IP is 192.168.0.1.

Ok. it's probably a stand alone modem. If it's something they gave you at installation time then it's probably a low end model modem. I would recommend checking out a Motorola SB 6121 series modem. These are great modems.

Also make sure your cable lines coming from the telephone pole or box to the building are in good condition and make sure that there aren't any T.V. line splitters. These will lower the signal going to the ISP modem. If you need to use them, use only 1 GOOD quality one.

When I do a speedtest it says my speed is good, like 24 Mbps or something.. it's just those certain sites. I dunno. Time for a new router I guess.

Can you list the sites that seem slow for you while using this router?
You can send me a PM if you feel more comfortable.

Ok, have you tried wired directly to the 601 router and shut OFF the wireless radio and is the same thing seen here?
Ensure you turn off any security SW temporarily before testing.

Let me now if you want someone to review your router settings with you.

GMail, Livejournal, Yahoo and Facebook and some other sites. Sometimes when pages are loading it says "wait for google.com" or googleaxis.com or something when I'm not even using Google or GMail I don't know what that's about.

Ya I tested out at home and they are good for me.

One thing I would do as a test, if you can, take the router to a friends, neighbor or families place and see if the problem tracks with it, if it does, then I might presume the issue is with the router and would recommend a new router. If not the the issue lies elsewhere. I would also check out a SB 6121 cable modem too. Keep us posted.

I've been running into weird issues like that with mine, too.  Some websites will take a double click to load, some web pages load faster than others, ebay gave me an error then didn't.  This was all wifi, I didn't test it wired.

I'm on Charter high speed cable as my ISP.

FW used is the latest 1.02NA.  I think that 1.01NA worked better for mine, so I may flash it back.

I think that was a refurbished router, so maybe it has some issues?
