Title: DHCP Reserved IP's
Post by: rjesse on August 19, 2012, 03:45:17 PM
I'm trying to setup a DSR-250 for my home/home business.  I've run into a few oddities, first of which is that the DHCP Reserved IP list seems to only support 10 devices.  Is this in fact true?  If this is being sold as small business router I can't believe that it would only allow 10 static addresses.

I have 24 IP's that I would like statically assigned and I'm only a home and home business of 2 people.

Are you Recerving ip addresses on the router or on the devices?

I'm reserving the IP's on the router for devices that I want to have a know IP address, I still want them to be DHCP as sometime I have to change DNS servers etc.

Well no experience here with DSR series routers. I know DIR series routers can do at least 200 however I don't know for sure since i only have about 20 devices. I reserve ALL device IP addresses on the router.

What FW is currently loaded?
I would contact DLink support and pose this question to them about this router and see.

in the North American Firmware version 1.05B20 when you try to add the 11th IP it gives

DHCP Configuration Failed.

I see you are running a RU version.

Have you been in phone contact with DLink support with this information yet?

No, I tried for 3 weeks but was never unsuccessful at getting through to them, every number I called they told me I had to call another number, as I'm in Canada nobody could figure out how to route my call.  The Canadian Consumer Group wouldn't help me, the US Business Group wouldn't help me because I was from Canada (even though the firmware/hardware are the same).  So I gave up.  Since then I did find a way to get a hold of the Canadian Business group, but this product has so many other problems I haven't bothered.  If they don't fix the routing hole in the next few weeks I will return the product.

RU version have less secure restrictions (max 40bit encryption) so it can be easily used by anyone I think (used RU and WW firmware without any problems) you can find RU firmware at dlink ru support site, http://ftp.dlink.ru/pub/Router/DSR-250N/Firmware/Old/

I recommend holding off on trying other regional FW until we can get DLink to have a look and see if there is another solution. Putting unsupporrted FW on his Router might void his warranty or ability to return the unit.

No plans to upgrade to a different firmware, especially if it only does 40 bit encryption, the main use of this router is my VPN.

Waiting patiently for the firewall to be fixed and the dhcp server to be increased to a reasonable size for a business class router.

I ran into the same problem when updateing to FW 1.05B20.
I have since used FW 1.05B55 and now running 1.05B73

On the later one I use19 reserved IPs. I believe there is still a max number allowed.

Where would I get these firmware versions?  The latest one listed for my device is FW 1.05B20.

I believe your looking at the firmware for the DSR-250N not DSR-250, is the firmware interchangeable?

.73 is a beta on the RU FTP site. I'm not sure if this will work on a NA region unit. I presume it might however there are probably differences between EU and NA units as far as FW goes.

I would recommend until you can get in touch with someone who can help you out at D-Link, I would hold off on trying anything from the RU site. .73 is for the 250N and I don't see a version listed for the 250 model. I don't think they are interchangeable. Possible however the N version is for wireless I believe.

So the only number i've been advised to is the following for any one in Canada:
http://www.dlink.com/ca/en/support/contact-support (http://www.dlink.com/ca/en/support/contact-support)

And apparently anyone from the U.S. Cannot access this number. I would phone them back again and see if you can get a hold of anyone higher up, level 3 or more. This needs to be seen by someone who has knowledge about the DSR series and can take it from there. My contact said they would look into this as well. No time frame though.

At least D-Link has been made aware of the problem.

Keep us posted on how it goes.

I submitted the issue again... Will see what happens.

The phone number listed on the website is for consumer support only, they will not speak to me about this product at that number, beleive me I've tried.

Finally got an email response for my request;

Dear Rick,

I believe you should be able to set 24 DHCP reservations. However can you please upgrade the firmware to being 1.05B53. The file can be downloaded from the following link http://tsd.dlink.com.tw/downloads2008.asp  and select your DSR 250 and the firmware file that you wan is the one that says DSR-250_A1_v1.05B53(WW)

Thank you for networking with D-Link .

I will try the firmware upgrade and see what happens I guess, sure would be nice if they actually knew for sure rather then us having to be Guinea Pigs with their firmware.

Glad someone responded.

I would factory reset the router before the upgrade then after.

Keep us posted on how it goes.

I see this firmware has been out for a while, makes me wonder why I was not told that before in dealing with my other issue where the routing does not work on this box.  I'd be curious to see if this solves both issues.

And or why this firmware is not listed on the website.

Hopefully can get to this in the day or so.
