dsl-2890al QoS setup for Steam
« on: May 13, 2014, 01:23:02 AM »

I'm wondering if anyone can provide instructions on how to setup QoS for Steam. I know the required ports but the issue is that dsl-2890al only allows for a specific port in QoS and doesn't have an option for port ranges. I emailed D'link asking for support and they said I can setup port forwarding for Steam...but port forwarding isn't the same thing as QoS.
When I play Dota 2 online my 3 kids are on the internet and hog the bandwidth and then my game suffers from lag. I'm hoping there is a way to setup QoS for Steam or at least Dota 2 so I won't be affected when playing online.

Thank you in advance for any help you can provide :)

FYI the ports Steam uses are:
Steam Client
UDP 27000 to 27015 inclusive (Game client traffic)
UDP 27015 to 27030 inclusive (Typically Matchmaking and HLTV)
TCP 27014 to 27050 inclusive (Steam downloads)
UDP 4380

Dedicated or Listen Servers
TCP 27015 (SRCDS Rcon port)

Steamworks P2P Networking and Steam Voice Chat
UDP 3478 (Outbound)
UDP 4379 (Outbound)
UDP 4380 (Outbound)

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your modem? Look at sticker under modem.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the modems web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Please review the user manual on starting on pg 105 and review this as this modem as the same QoS engine:
DIR-645/835/868L/865L/826L Gaming and QoS for XBL

Thank you for your reply
My Hardware version on my modem is A1
The Firmware version is currently loaded is AU_1.02.04
The region I am located in is Australia

I reviewed the user manual that you provided the link to. I still don't understand how I am can add a range of port numbers, it seems I can only list a single port number. The link you provided that shows QoS looks to be the same as my modem/router. Do I need to create a separate rule in QoS for each port number that is required?

Hopefully with your help I can work this out :)

I would use the Global ports rule initially and set up rules for each device that your wanting to manage. If theres only one device then you would only need one rule using ports 0 and 65535 pointing to the one devices IP address.

If you have other devices that don't need to be managed, use the ALLOTHERDEVICES example and put them one rule using global ports and Normal Priority and this will ensure those devices still get bandwidth and connections while your one device thats set for a higher priority will get what it needs with out effecting any others.
