Can't connect to my DNS 320 thought SMB on windows 10
« on: February 12, 2017, 07:26:11 AM »

Hi everyone,

I'm facing a strange bug since 1 month, i can't connect using file explorer in windows 10 on my DNS 320 (using either ip or NETBIOS name). The NAS and computer are in the same WORKGROUP.

The NAS is fully working because :
I can connect to the NAS web interface (browse file inside the web interface), or even ping its IP on the same computer.
I can browse file from the NAS using my android Phone using SMB.

It may be a recent windows 10 update that break the SMB connexion.

The NAS is running 2.05 firmware (i even tried the beta one 2.05.B10).
H/W ver : A1

Dunno what to do.

I hope someone can help me solve this problem.

To get the answer to your problem you will have to look on some win 10 forums.  There is a problem with CIFS/SMB in win 10 that Microsoft seem unable to fix (they fix one part and break another part - not good).

Link>Welcome!

  • What region are you located?

What Mfr and model is the main host router?
Is the DNS getting a Dynamic IP address from the main host router? I recommend using a Static IP address ON the DNS set to 192.168.#.32 or .20.
Swap out LAN cables. Link> Cat6 is recommended.[/li][/list]

Can you test with a Windows 7 PC by chance?

Hi, thanks for your support,

I'm from Western Europe, the router is from an internet provider. The NAS is using a static IP address, and it's working well on my Win 7 Pro x64.

I know the problem is because of my windows 10. But 1 month ago everything worked well. I asked here because maybe some of you people know how to solve this problem.

Unfortunately i can't. It's not possible to update the firmware of the NAS to make it compatible with those win10 updates ?

Might do a search on Windows 10 and SMB problems. I've seen some articles talking about editing the registry for SMB versions to compatible with in 10. There is SMB v1 and now v2. I thought I saw an article about SMBv2 being default in 10.
The article and started mentioning problems with 10 and NAS and SMB:
http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=65722.0
and http://windowanswers.com/windows-rt/windows-10-falls-to-access-network-drives-297748.html

Any chance you have a spare PC with Windows 7 on it?

Maybe it's a dumb question but is it possible to make the DLink NAS compatible SMB v2 (or even v3) via firmware update (maybe not at the moment, but is it technically possible) ?

I presume it maybe possible. What would all be involved maybe more then what D-Link may consider doing. There's a lot that goes into development and coding of FW and finally testing which needs to be done so that nothing else is found to be broke. I'm sure there is some licenses and framework that has to be handled as well from the owners of SMB and MS. However it maybe just an SMB or MS issue where they need to fix it. It does seem to be an issue in there ball park. Where or not D-Link is doing anything about this, I don't know. Users are encouraged to contact D-Link and request review of this issue.

More to the point it appears that Microsoft are pushing their cloud offering to replace NAS storage.  If it means win 10 SMB is incompatible with almost all small NAS boxes so be it (MS has a history of doing things like this, it's the old 'embrace, extend, extinguish' syndrome.

There might be a possibility to get the latest MS version of SMB working with the NAS but that would require someone to write that implementation to run on something like Alt-F or FunPlug.

Did you ever get a fix to this problem?

I just had the great idea of digging my DNS 320 out of the basement to use for streaming some movies on some different devices and am having this exact problem.

Do I just throw the thing in the bin?

Using Windows 10?

What FW version is the DNS using?

How are you attempting to connect to the DNS?
