DNS-343 with four 1.5TB Seagate Barracuda 702.11 drives (all running firmware CCIH per previous posts I've seen).

Won't mount VOLUME1 (volume not detect....and yet, if I boot the device minus any one of the drives, I get the message that VOLUME1 has been degraded).

I WOULD LOVE FOR SOMEONE AFFILIATED WITH D-LINK TO EXPLAIN TO ME HOW MY 343 WON'T MOUNT THE VOLUME, YET IT KNOWS ENOUGH TO TELL ME THAT SAME VOLUME (THAT IT WILL NO LONGER SEE) HAS BEEN DEGRADED.

Am I missing something here?  Does ANYONE have a suggestion as to how I might get to the volume???

I have R-Studio but no means of connecting the 4 drives at once to try a RAID recovery.

Have you rebooted the unit? In the Status page does it provide a sync time remaining counter above the degraded status?
