DIR-865L vs DIR-628 virtual server problem
« on: December 10, 2012, 08:49:57 AM »

My previous router Dlink DIR-628 packed it in and I replaced it with the DIR-865L.
Previously I had a virtual server set up on the DIR-628 for my security cameras and it worked
through accessing through the assigned IP address on the router and through the dynamic DNS website.

I set up the new DIR-865L the same way.  Set the virtual server the same as the DIR-628.

I can still access the cameras through the IP address and port directly but not through the dynamic DNS website?  I assume there is a problem with the virtual server but I set it up exactly the same.  I am confused.
If anyone has an idea or could help it would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Rob

Link>Welcome!

Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on routers web page under status.
What region are you located?

What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
What ISP Modem do you have? Stand Alone or built in router?
What ISP Modem make and model do you have?

If this modem has a built in router, it's best to bridge the modem. Having 2 routers on the same line can cause connection problems.
Double NAT
To tell if the modem is bridged or not, look at the routers web page, Status/Device Info/Wan Section, if there is a 192.168.0.# address in the WAN IP address field, then the modem is not bridged.
If the modem can't be bridged then see if the modem has a DMZ option and input the IP address the router gets from the modem and put that into the modems DMZ.
Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask.

Some things to try: - Log into the routers web page at 192.168.0.1. Use IE, Opera or FF to manage the router.
Turn off ALL QoS or Disable Traffic Shaping (DIR only) GameFuel (DGL only and if ON.) options. Advanced/QoS or Gamefuel.
Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option.
Turn on DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. If you happen to use 3rd party DNS services, and have the DNS addresses manually entered into the Setup/Internet/Manual section, this option can be turned off.
Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
Set Firewall settings to Endpoint Independent for TCP and UDP under Advanced/Firewall.
Enable uPnP and Multi-cast Streaming under Advanced/Networking. Disable uPnP for testing Port Forwarding rules.
WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router. Advanced/Advanced Networking/WAN Port Speed

Are those ISP default DNS addresses or 3rd party?

Not exactly sure what you mean.  Sorry I am a newbie.  They come from the ISP. So I believe they are not third party.  I have since done all of the things you suggested also.  I have to reboot the modem and reboot my dvr to see if it works.

Is it not strange I can get to the DVR (cameras) by typing the IP address and port assigned to them but can't through the dynamic DNS?

Thanks,

Rob

How are you trying to use Dynamic DNS when you try to connect. This maybe a feature that night not be included in this model router. I mainly connect to any of my devices using the IP address or host name should work.

I use the hostname that I setup through dlinkddns.com.
When on my local network I can access the DVR through the assigned IP and port.
When I try to access the DVR from another network I can't (using my ip address not the router assigned), using the virtual server.

Funny thing is I could do it from the earlier model of router 628................

Not sure what I am doing wrong.....  frustrating though.

Have you tried using a different device in VS and see if you can connect to it from the WAN side? Maybe try using Port Forwarding to test. If you do, try disabling uPnP as well. Are the devices being reserved on the router with IP addresses? How is the NAT set on the router? I recommend Endpoint Independent. I would try disabling DDNS and use ISP DNS to test to see if you can get thru first.

You maybe want to put in a call to DLink, level 2 or higher and ask about this.

Keep us posted.
