Best setup for DIR-657 and Motorola Arris SB6141 Modem
« on: September 19, 2015, 10:06:57 AM »

Hello, new to this forum stuff. Question: I have the DIR-657 Media Route connected to my Motorola Cable Modem for home wireless. I am paying for 100Mbps with TW. When connected through my router wirelessly I only get max 20Mbps, when connected directly to my modem I get 95Mbps or close to 100Mbps. How can I achieve max speed through my DIR-657 media router??? What are the ideal settings for this setup?  Thank you

Link>Welcome!

  • What Hardware version is your router? Look at sticker under the router case.
  • Link>What Firmware version is currently loaded? Found on the routers web page under status.
  • What region are you located?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

What speeds do you see if you are hard LAN wired to the router?

Is QoS enabled? Disable it and re-test.

H/W Ver: A1
F/W Ver: 1.01

Region: Austin Texas USA

Time Warner Cable Internet
Motorola SB6141

QoS engine disabled did not make a difference.

When hard Lan wired to the router I get 71 Mbps, wireless I get 20Mbps

What wireless modes are you using?
Try single mode N, WPA2/AES only and channel 11.

Be aware that wireless speeds testing may differ since there are many variables that will contribute to accurate speed testing and also wireless speed tests may not achieve the same speeds seen on wired Gb Lan connections. Just the nature of the beast. Also depends on device designe and support. Not all devices are made the same.

using mixed n,g, and b on ch 11
auto 20mhz/40

tried what you suggested and same results.

I understand what you say about differing speeds, but a difference of 50 Mbps between wired and wireless seems a bit much. I know there's and issue somewhere. thanks

Try single mode N if you don't need G for any older devices.
Disable HT-20/40Mhz Co-existance under Advanced/Advanced wireless.

Try different devices as well.

You were right on this. I was testing my connection speeds with my wireless desktop which was the wrong thing to do. The first time I hard wired my laptop to either the modem or router, the speeds were maximum. So, with that said, things seem to be ok after hard wiring my Xbox 360 and keeping all other devices wireless. My desktop shows my wireless speeds at 130Mbps when I look in the Network and Sharing Center. I've kept my router wireless settings at ch 11, mode N only, and did everything else we talked about. Seems to be ok now. Thanks for all your help!

Wired is best for xbox or gaming if at all possible.
Do you have a 360 Slim or 1st gen 360? There is a problem on the Slims however I don't think it appears with the DIR-657. Slims have bad wireless drivers and on newer generation routers, fail to connect at any speed higher that 11Mb. If I remember the 657 didn't  have issue with this.

Hope you enjoy.
