Title: DGL wireless restarts
Post by: ob12 on February 28, 2010, 04:33:10 PM
I just upgraded my DGL4100 to a DGL4500, as the 4100 died after several years of faithful service.  The new router seems buggy to me.  I upgraded the firmware to the 1.22 firmware to see if that helped things out a bit, and it did not.  I get wireless restart messages in the log constantly, like every 5 minutes or so.  I have several devices, both wired and wireless on the router, and to me things seem slower.  Even with gamefuel active, my latency to WoW is like 250+ when on the 4100 it used be less than 100 always.  I even tried setting up some rules for it to no avail, I mean it had no impact, better or worse.

I would like to get the wireless restart messages fixed and get the wireless to stop dropping.

I would also like to get gamefuel to work again or work better.

I would like to get the USB backup drive connected to the router working as well, (I posted in the shareport forum).

Is there any help coming with these issues or should I just return it and try to get another 4100?

What wireless mode are you using? Have you tried G mode only at 2.4Ghz? Let us know.

I have it set to mixed for wireless mode.  I have several wireless devices, and not sure all of them are G regretably.  I have four zunes, two new HD and two old 30GB bricks.  I also have a Wii, three notebook computers, (two personal one work).  On the wired side, I have two desktops, two laptops, xbox360, ps3, network printer (HP officejet), and two dish DVR's.

So you guys think I should down rev to 1.15 or return it?  I don't want to brick the thing, and with all the devices I have, going without is not really an option.  I only have like four more days on my newegg return policy...

How about looking at my Gaming and GameFuel stick and try the Wireless settings there first. I have a good buddy that his son is set up on Wireless G only 2.4Ghz and we play MW2 alot. Play with him friday nite. He's on the same FW version. Disregard the Gaming section, that only for PC gaming. I know, I need to modify. Give that a go and see how it works. Let us know.

That was one of the first things I did after installing the 1.22 firmware.  And thank you, nice sticky.  We actually mainly play PC online gaming like EQ2, WoW, L4D2, Borderlands, etc...

It seems to be working better now that I don't have the USB backup drive connected to the USB port, so I am only getting the wireless resets about every 15 to 20 minutes now, which is a drastic improvement.

You shouldn't be getting any resets in those time frames let alone hours, maybe days however I would contact DLink and talk to them about this reset issue. You shouldn't be seeing these at all unless there is something wrong. Let us know how this goes and hope it can be fixed.

Funny thing, I worked from home today with my work laptop, a brand new E6400 Dell laptop, and I was getting wireless disconnects at least every 2 minutes with that one.  Checking the router log, it was displaying the same old "wireless restart" message.

Did I get a lemon?

if your getting wireless resets on 2 different LTs, then I would call DLink and see if they can help you resolve this issue. I wish I could be of more help. Let us know how this turns out.

I get alot of interference on my wireless with my Wii controllers active.  Pull the batteries out of the  Wiimotes, and the router quits searching for new channel.  Weird, but that is my two cents worth.

Also try turning off channel scan. Could be detecting the interference and changing the channel which is dropping the connection. Wireless restart doesn't mean wireless failure, think it means it restarted it for a purpose. Its not like a lock up, or a transmit error

I was having wireless restarts as well. One about every 5 to 7 mins. I did some research and I think these routers are having and issue with IP6. I remove IP6 from my network adaptor and the restarted stoped. I added it back and the restarts starting happening again, removed it and they stop. I do not think these routers can handle IP6. I suggest (unbinding) removing it for your NIC. I thin Vist and Win 7 add IP6 by default.

I had the same problem and had Symantec Endpoint protection v11 given to me from my employer. This antivirus program caused my Wireless radio to restart every couple of minutes when I looked at my DGL-4500's log file. After removing this program and replacing it with Norton Internet Security or Norton 360 this problem has cleared. Do you have Symantec Endpoint installed on any networked computer? If so I would upgrade or remove it.  ;)

Yes these routers don't support IPv6 however really shouldn't be hanging or stalling if IPv6 is installed and running. However could me an issue that maybe we would report to Dlink in the User Requests and Bugs post I made to let them know that people are seeing this issue. I'm running 7x64 and it's running great and my 4500 hasn't been giving any indication of problems. Of course, not to say that others wont. Good that at least there is a work around for it.
