DIR-655 Bug Found
« on: November 14, 2012, 10:39:26 PM »

I found a semi-serious bug in DIR-655. I have hardware revision B1 and noticed this on 2.07NA and 2.10NA. It may exist elsewhere. It is random and does not always happen, making diagnosis very difficult.

While trying to get my FTP server working (see http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=51194.0) I noticed this problem. I was making changes to virtual servers. However when rebooting to make the changes take effect the router would no longer allow Internet through and was broadcasting an insecure wifi network with the SSID I had set. Checking those settings they were all fine (it thought it was still doing WPA2 personal, even though it was not). So I disabled the settings I had just changed. The problem persisted! Even editing the wifi settings and saving, restarting, and power cycling had no effect. Still no Internet and no wifi protection.

The only fix was to reset the settings to factory default and things would be okay again. But randomly when changing settings (only noticed this with virtual server, port forwarding, and DMZ) it would occur again. I updated the firmware to 2.10NA and problems would still randomly show up. Sometimes restoring a configuration from before these problems showed up would cause the problems to show up as well.

I know that this probably cannot be fixed without knowing exactly what was happening, but being a random occurrence I cannot give any more information.

Was factory reset performed before and after the FW updates?

It's normal to loose Internet during reboots. Happens on on D-Link routers for a short period of time. The router temporarily shuts down the connection and re-establishes it.

As of broadcasting un-secure WiFi, not sure  about this. Does the secure WiFi operate correctly after the reboot as completed? How are you determining this un-secure mode? This happening on all modes? You sure you are looking at the SSID you have set up? Any other un-secure WiFi near by?

I probably did apply a factory reset before the FW update. But this happens many factory resets after applying the FW anyways.

The Internet loss is not temporary, it is persistent (10 min +). Even after power cycling and waiting minutes. Same results through the messed up wifi or wired connections.

The secure wifi would work after resetting factory defaults, but randomly after changing other non-related settings and rebooting it would become unsecure again (even though the router would think it was still broadcasting securely as seen on the status page).

I was determining the unsecure-ness of it since I would have devices no longer recognize the WiFi since it was no longer secure. I had to tell them to use the unsecure one (in Windows this shows up with a warning symbol, on any device it won't require you to enter any sort of password when connecting, also can check how it is connecting and it won't be using any security). Once connected to the unsecure wireless I would be able to access the router admin page (however not the Internet since that would be cut out).

There are dozens of other wifis around me (my computer can see 33 right now). However none of them use the same SSID that I do (checked when my router is off) and only one is insecure (called linksys...).

Wow, 33 huh? Makes me wonder if any of these could be interfering how your router is working on WiFi. Most of these on 2.4Ghz? Have you set up manual channel on the 655? Is there a clear and open channel available?

You might test with WiFi turned OFF and wire connect a PC and see if it looses internet at any time.

Is the Uverse modem WiFi enabled by chance? Does it have built in WiFi? I would turn this off during this test time frame as well if there is one.

I think another good test to see if you can get PF going would be to by pass the 655 router for now and go directly to the ATT modem and see if you can get PF working. Doe it have any sort of PF options?

I have all features of the Uverse modem shut off that I can (including wifi - which I have had turned off since day one). The DIR-655 is set to auto-channel scan (it picked 11 this time on status page). Set to use G and N and 20/40 MHz for channel width. I don't think this is the problem though. It was working fine with these settings for over a year in the same environment. Only when I tinkered with some non-wifi related settings did it go kurflouey.

I will try to test this without wifi, however my method will be simply to keep changing the virtual server config and rebooting until it decides to not work. Overall very obnoxious.

One problem with having 33 other Wifi's near bear, autoscan is probably running into WiFi congestion and eventually or maybe having to stop and find another open channel. If it picked up 11, I would turn off AutoScan and manually set channel 11.

Let us know how it does with WiFi radio OFF. I'll give this ago maybe this weekend after I'm done testing an DIR-857 out.

This is not a bug.
