DIR-655_A1_fw_1-11EUb02

This is by far the best firmware that i've found... I've had it for 4 years and its yet to crash or any other problem. It's incredibly stable.

The wireless works amazingly well compared to other firmwares. I get 50% signal 3 solid walled rooms away. The position of the router is very importante, aim the antennas where your going to be using the wireless. It seems as though it's best if the router is sitting with its antenna facing upwards into the sky, change its position until you get the signal just right.

As for wired connection, it works incredibly well too. No problems after 4 years. Not one drop.

The problem with this firmware is that it's one of the early ones and thus doesn't have some of the later features, such as shareport etc. But for the main things that you want a router for i.e. wireless, wired, Multicast Streams etc... It works really well especially for the main things that you would use it for the most.

Imagine that 4 years without 1 problem....

Highly recommended!

If you can't find the firmware, it's here: http://www.dlink.com/uk/en/home-solutions/support/product/dir-655-wireless-n-gigabit-router?revision=uk_reva2

Shouldn't the forum moderators make a note of this, sort of a "which firmware works best for what" and make this a sticky. Such as, the best most reliable firmware for wireless, wired, multi streaming is firmware 11EUb02. It seems a shame that this information is in here but is going to get lost amongst all the post.

In a perfect world and if we had more resources to test each and every version of FW out against HW, maybe we could come up with a good list. Having so many different product models, Revs and versions of FW, makes it very difficult to come up with a list of what works and what doesn't seem to work. Also many things can effect how FW works, even thought it might seem to be the FW at fault, sometimes doing a bit more trouble shooting and trying to figure out what other underlying things maybe causing people to think that FW maybe at fault, where sometimes it results in getting faults negatives and positives before doing any more investigation into the actual problem. For the most part, having people give feedback such as your self on your experiences seems to be a good way for know to let others know what works and what doesn't. We try to keep archive stickies around and in the FAQ Library so we can keep and history of good and important information to help others looking for it in case there isn't anyone around with a quick response.

Again, thank you for your feedback and response. Visit the forums and any feedback giving is helpful to others. We are here to help each other.

Enjoy.

Thank you FurryNutz!

Also!

I've just decided to test the wireless throughput on this firmware and it's mind blowing, i didn't realise how good it was. Wireless is about 45% lower than gigabit throughput of this router. Wireless throughput is 94mbps and gigabit wired is about 230mbps. In MB/s terms wireless is about 10.5 and gigabit about 24.2 MB/s.

If you want my config file let me know.

I'd most definitely would give this firmware a go even if it is EU version, i've taken a chance at other firmwares from NA and russia (RU) and so on without much problem, if you can find sites that will tell you how to move back to older firmwares and there is as i've done it myself.

Check it out, you might be just as amazed as i am.

Ya, wireless will never be like wired LAN. I prefer to use wired over wireless for large data streams. Wireless is good for most things, however gaming and streaming, LAN handles that well.

Have you tried a external Gb network switch between router and wired PCs? I usually see 50-60MB/s on my network.
