fan starts after spindown and doesn't stop
« on: February 22, 2010, 11:28:53 AM »

Hello together,

I've got a curious problem with my 323. When the HDs spindown the fan starts up in slow mode and doesn't stop. I tried nearly everything and only got it well by installing fun_plug and setting up a customed fan_control-script (as the commands meanwhile have changed). During normal use everything runs fine. Anybody else having this "feature" and an idea to solve it? Some details on my system:

- Firmware 1.08eu (Fan-Setting Auto:Off/Low/High)
- 2 Samsung HD154UI SpinPoint 1.5TB running as JDOB

To avoid answers that already have been here:
- tried change from Auto:Off/Low/High to Auto:Low/High and viceversa with restart
- tried settings reset (hardware and software)
- it's not a temperature issue (after 8 hours the fan running all the night the temperature ist at 23°C)
thanks for your support

Hello together,

Same here too with similar configuration :
- Firmware 1.08final (Fan-Setting Auto:Off/Low/High)
- 2 Samsung HD154UI SpinPoint 1.0TB running as JBOD/RAID1

I woke up at 1:00 am, opened admin interface and Save Tools > Power Management Settings to shut down the little noise of slow mode.. But if I access datas...

Other question : To find my NAS shares over network under W7, I have to Save Setup > Device Settings...
Some scripts aren't running before ?

@cinefil1024:
- When you access your data the disks aren't in spindown any more so it's normal your fan will start or run when the temperature rises.
- Sorry, no experience with W7 - still running XP :-)

@laving: if you're interested I can send you my script.

I have several Win7 machines here, and my wife's machine has her documents mapped to the DNS-323 so she can see them from the laptop and the desktop.  That works flawlessly with XP and Win7 regardless of restarts of one or the other system.

@Liquiando
You're right, but I said that because if I access my datas :
disks run and possibly fan start... -> fan stop -> disks enter in spindown mode -> fan start in slow mode ://

Did you reset to factory defaults and manually reconfigure?  That's what it took to get mine behaving after loading 1.08.

Since my NAS is located in the basement along with my server, router and other equipment, I actually am happy to see teh fan running all the time. I use the setting low/high as it keeps the temp @ a constant 100 degrees compared to 107-114 if the fan is off.

Fan off/low/high:

Here's what mine is currently saying, it's hibernating with the fan settings (Off/Low/High)

System Temperature:     95°F / 35°C

So I think it's just a bug as the systems seems to be very buggy. I could helb myself with a script and that's fine. Just annoying spending money for such a crap.

I've got the same problem, it was also present with v1.07, the fan never stops, it's annoying and must be a bug in code or hardware issue.  There are a ton of threads and folks reporting this, where is D-Link on this.

PS - I've tried re-flashing, tried down grading then upgrading, reset facotry defaults, powered on/off, changed fan settings back and forth, no luck.

I have the exact same problem here with the 1.08 firmware on a DNS-323 that is only a couple weeks old.  No matter the setting as soon as the DNS-323 hibernates the fan starts up in low speed and never stops.  I've tried reset to default for all settings, different fan settings, turning power recovery on/off.  Nothing seems to change it.

Is there any reason why the fan is coming on when the drives are hibernated?  All it is really going to do is build up dust even faster in the unit unnecessarily.

Is installing fun_plug that only work around available for this?

Hello together,

same problem at my NAS, hardware revision C1, firmware 1.08.

The fan runs always at low / high speed and never turns off, even if the HDDs hibernate.
I noticed that the "fancontol" program is also responsible for hibernating the HDDs.

Using a shell script results in preventing the HDDs to hibernate (because it starts from HDD?), nevertheless the fan stops as desired.

Anyone who has a solution for the C1 board to hibernate the plates AND stops the fan?

Thank's in advance

I see that you tried reseting to facory defaults... did you reload the config from a saved file?
If you did... then it would just "re-activate" the problem

Try reseting to defaults using the Reset button on the back of the DNS-323,
Then re-enter the settings manually... DON'T RELOAD FROM A SAVED FILE.

I totally agree, learned this lesson first hand. :)  They apparently just restore an image of everything, so it brings back your problem.  Lame parameter saving process, it needs to be portable across firmware versions.  ::)
