For a few weeks now I have been experiencing exceeding slow read times on the DNS-323 when I first access a directory, particularly if there are many files and/or folders in the directory. Once I have entered the directory the performance increases which might suggest and indexing issue. Is there a way to force the DNS to rebuild the indexing on one or both disks?

Perhaps your unit goes to sleep?

I know this does not relate to the question you asked, but I noticed that you are running RAID0 & JBOD - please be aware that failure of a disk will result in your data becoming inaccessible, so be sure to back it up regularly.

fordem: thanks for the reminder ... I do back up regularly
mihies: no, this is after repeated accesses so the unit should be active

More info - I am still have dreadful access speeds to display directories on my OSX 10.6.8 MacBook Pro, with my music folder taking over 2 minutes to display. My daughter's Windows 7 PC takes less than two seconds to access the folder.
Read speed from the NAS to the MacBook is OK at over 150Mbps. Any thoughts on why the directory display is such a dog from a Mac?
