Title: SharePort USB utility experience
Post by: EddieZ on September 25, 2008, 01:19:13 PM
Let's hear it about the new gadget.

I can tell you that I installed it on wired and wireless and it works flawlessly with my HP 843C printer. I even tried a Chinese MP3 player and it was detected and directly accessible.

First impression: OK, got to test whether 2 clients can use/connect to the device at the same time though

Played with it too, stuck a USB hard drive into the port and was able to use it with the utility running.  No issues so far.

You can also plug a powered USB hub and connect more than one device to your router. So far it's working great.

Also, you can't have two users connected to the same device at one given time, but it has a nice request feature which shows a message to the existing user.

Works without problems with a Samsung CLP 300 color laser printer.

The speed with a USB-storage device is less than 1MB/s, not enough for serious use.
But one can't expect much more from a Homerouter.

Good Job D-Link  :)

I am about to buy a Samsung CLP-315 and was wondering it would work with the router now the USB utility has arrived. Thanks for the post!

Attention to all posters: Would be nice to summarize which devices/brands/types (printers, USB drives etc) are compatible and which are not. So please name them in your post.

I've tried with 4 things and 3 have worked (note that only one pc can use a device at a time!):

1: Microsoft Lifecam VX3000 - NOT WORKING
Computer connects to device just fine.  However, whenever any app (Live Messenger, AIM, Skype, Lifecam Console, etc) tries to use it at all, the app freezes for roughly a minute.  Then Vista makes the "device disconnected noise", the D-Link tool clears out the list of devices for a few seconds, then loads it again with the camera "waiting for connection" - if I connect again the process repeats.  If I don't try to use the camera it stays connected.  The problem seems to be with the D-Link driver, since the whole list of devices unloads and reloads after a few seconds.  The router does not reboot during this time.  Additionally, while the app is frozen if I try to disconnect the webcam from the Shareport utility, it says "disconnect failed" and will not reload the list of devices until I exit and reopen the program.
Lycan!  Can you forward this problem to the D-Link engineers?  It would be REALLY SWEET if I could use my webcam with the router, because it would be my new home security system!

2: Logitech USB Trackball - WORKING
What can I say, I move it and click and it works :)

3: Canon iP1600 Printer - WORKING
Works great.  Takes a while to start printing, but be patient and you will be rewarded!

4: Kingston DataTraveler 2.0 4GB Jumpdrive - WORKING
A bit slow but does not have any issues reading or writing data.

Edit:  Lycan! The driver will also intermittently BSOD my XP Pro (32 bit) laptop when it is connected to a device with the SharePoint utility AND I unplug the device from the back of the router without first disconnecting the utility.  Another bug to report!  Although most users probably wont disconnect stuff once it's hooked up.

No issue here. Disconnected printer and USB stick while still connected with SharePort. You might want to check your local drivers...?

Running Vista Ultimate x86.

It happened maybe once out of 5 times.  Definitely D-Link issue, the BSoD referenced a D-Link file "DLinkUDSMbus.sys" or DlinkUDSTcpBus.sys Laptop is rock solid otherwise!  I'm a computer tech for a living, so I wouldn't even post if it was potentially something on my laptop.

So am I...

Thanks for the extra info. Very useful for the techies @ Dlink
'SMbus' reference does indicate that this might not be a generic issue. Perhaps the laptop brand/type for a heads up?

To be 100% honest, it could have been the D-Link TCP bus driver also, in fact I'm pretty sure it was.  I didn't write down the name and just noticed there are actually two drivers there.  The other one is "DlinkUDSTcpBus.sys"  My event log didn't write any info about it since this laptop is protected with Truecrypt.

For reference, the laptop is an Acer Travelmate 2423WXCI (Travelmate 2420 Series)

I don't care about this bug as much as the webcam problem though, really was amped about possibly using it as my home security system without having to put a pc right next to the door.

I attached a USB Hard Drive (Ximeta NDAS + Seagate 7200.11 500GB) - While I can ordinarily get about 18MB/sec from it directly attached to my laptop, it did achieve about 800 KB/sec through the DIR-655.

Honestly I'm shocked we even have this capability at all- it's been a feature I wanted for a very long time since my first DIR-635 router.  With time I'm sure the slow performance can be addressed and sped up.

My DNS-323 can get 4.3 MB/sec via SMB and over 12MB/sec via multiple FTPs over wireless- so there is room for improvement here, just depends on how much can be squeezed out of the router hardware.

Wonder if SharePort can be added to the DNS-323?  Talk about the holy grail of storage devices.... storage, usb server, network server, print server, UPS-management server (via usb)....

I wonder:  Is the port on the DIR-655 USB 1.x or 2.0?  Another question for our connect Lycan :)

Post by: EddieZ on September 25, 2008, 04:11:01 PM
Just a guess, but when the 655 USB port was designed only to act as WCN port I suppose they used USB 1.0. Putting in a USB 2.0 would be useless...

Looking at the throughput rate with USB HDD this might be te case. If not there is just not enough RAM and/or CPU power to get a decent throughput.

Yah, that's what I'm thinking.  That could also be why my webcam is unhappy.

Either way, still perfect for printers!  I mean, if the router had this before (oh it also does scanning too) I wouldn't have bought my expensive network AiO :)

Nice, ordered one right away :-)

Only minor possible 'con' is that the whole hub will be reserved by the single user and still does not allow for seperate use of each device. So we'll put in a request for multiple users (if the access model of SharePort allows that anyway). I assume that Lycan is already taking notes here  ;)

I don't have a real USB hub, but I tested with a hard drive enclosure which gives a pair of extra USB ports. I could connect to the hard drive as well as other devices on the extra USB ports. I could even connect one user to the hard drive and other user to any of the devices on the extra ports.

I guss a USB hub will do the trick too. Same principle. The last thing is good to hear; this will enable my laserprinter, inkjet printer and an USB drive for back-ups, possibly a webcam, and three other device to connect (it's a 7 port hub  ;D , I still need to find three usefull devices to fill it up...). Thanks for the feedback.

Besides the WD config, you can only access a device from 1 PC. If another PC needs access it needs to be released by that user. They solved that in a good manner at Dlink...but if the requested user is absent from hisd/her machine you've got a problem: it needs to be confirmed.

I used an WD 400GB HDD in a Galaxy Metal Gear-USB 2.0/Firewire enclosure.
The Shareport Utility gave me a code 10-Failed to start device message on the USB Mass storage device driver. Before connecting the external drive I did tested it against my desktop using the USB 2.0 ports.
I did successfully connectedand accessed a PNY 128MB flash drive remotely.
Any other details needed? Running 1.21B05 release on the DIR-655.

Has anyone had any problems with SharePort working and then suddenly not?  It was working just great .. and now the SharePort utility shows nothing.  I've reflashed 1.21b5, uninstalled and reinstalled SPUtil, rebooted, powered everything off then back on, changed the usb config to WZC then back to network, tried a known good PNY USB memory stick, disabled my firewall...

The USB light is lit on the router, but it never blinks.  When I right-click on the SPUtil tray icon, it no longer displays my router and the connect/disconnect options it used to.

My impression is a setting or something is stuck on the router.  I've reset the configuration and set everything up from scratch and it still isn't working.  I'll keep at it but I don't know why at this point the USB is not working.

You might wanna give some extra info. OS, NIC's. Did you powercycle the router, not only restting it?
You could try removing the utilty completely . So remove all references to drivers in the registry, reboot and all files (manually). Caution: only try this when you really know how to edit the registry

Lenovo ThinkPad T61 w/ Vista Business x64 - Intel 4965AGN Wireless.   Yes I pulled the power plug from the back of the router.  It still isn't working today.  When I feel like it I'll try it out wired and on another laptop (ThinkPad R50 w/ XP Pro - Intel 2200BG Wireless).

T61 + Wired = no good
R50 + Wireless/Wired = good

Vista and/or 64-bit problem?

Found the culprit:

I had installed VMWare Server 2.0 yesterday.  That effectively broke SharePort.  After uninstalling VMWare, SharePort works properly.  Reinstall VMWare Server, SharePort breaks again.  In prior experience with VMWare and other network-aware applications, I've seen this happen and it is usually due to some nonstandard protocol that doesn't bide well when Virtual NIC hardware is installed.  It would probably be advantageous for D-Link to understand this issue; it would most likely enhance SharePort's network resiliency when multiple protocols (not just TCP/IP) are running on one wire(less).

I havn't experienced what you experienced with the file copy/move.

I posted this on the other thread, but I think at least with the printer, that if there is a queue built up from other computers while one computer is still printing, that the utility should automatically release the printer so that the other computers can automatically start their print job.

version 1 of the utility BSODS my vista after a while of running. Not sure why that is?? I'm not using it when it happens it just does it all of a sudden. Didn't think of looking in the event logs though, shame on me. :P But I think it may have to do with powersaving it's the only thing I can think of since i'm using it on a laptop.

My experience has not been as good. So far every attempt to install Shareport USB utility has met with BSOD - I have tried three PCs with same result - Vista Business, XP Pro and XP Media Center - point of commonality Trend Micro Internet Security - all three PCs produced BSOD indicatinf Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL Stop 0x0..D1,0X0...06,0X0...02,0x0...00,0x8BB42599 tmtdi.sys. I am currently uninstalling Trend Micro in favor of CA AV + Anti-Spy and will report back on results

Install fails with BSOD if net limiter pro is installed.

Once installed, seems to work fine, though the single user at a time limitation makes this all but worthless for NAS.

Print sharing is a bit more tolerant of the single user limitation and was even able to successfully share a non-networkable USB printer, but it would still be nice if the software would allow all of the users on the network to connect and would negotiate queueing on its own instead of having to ask the remote user to release the device.

After uninstalling Trend Micro and replacing with CA AV / Anti-Spyware, everything worked just great. Was able to share my USB HDD and transfer files from the HDD to a PC at rates ~= 36 Mb / sec  or about 4.25 MB / sec. Slower than I'd have expected a bit but still better than USB 1.1's max of 12Mb/sec so it is USB 2.0. Not sure where the delay is, although 1 PC on our network still had Jumbo Frames set to 1536 rather than 9014. Fixed but haven't retested since though. Don't expect much of a difference at any rate.

One future request (as all other users seems to request) is that it would be great to be able to share the USB to more than one user at the time.

Hi,

I have started getting these annoing little pop-up boxes fom the share-port software saying that Connection Has Been Lost....  they repeat every so often.

Also, isn't the router supposed to release the connection to a given PC after so many minutes of idle time from that PC ?  I thought so, but maybe I am mixed up.

but
2. A USB webcam will 99% not work on the router USB port (has something to do with the datastream required)

I loaded windows XP from scratch tonight on my HP laptop. Same problem. Can't see the IP adress and cannot connect to any USB drives.

I have nothing installed on this laptop except the OS and Shareport.

Can someone post the Windows Firewall settings, what IP range and subnet they are using?

I'm using 192.168.0.2-10 for my DHCP Range. My router is 192.168.0.1.

My Windows Firewall settings are:
Any Computer - C:\Program Files\D-Link\SharePort Network USB Utility\SharePort Network USB Utility.exe
Any Computer - SharePort Network USB Utility UDP Port - UDP 9303

I took a look at the Windows Installer package tonight for the Shareport 1.0 utility. There's not much in there. Just some registry entries, a custom action that installs the *.sys files, the 32 and 64 bit files, and some shortcuts. If anyone wants the guts of their install extracted, I can send it to you offline.

I also looked at SharePort Network USB Utility.exe with Dependency Walker. It's pretty clean. Only two errors to an *.enu file and a *.en file that look pretty minor.

I'd appreciate any help that anyone can give. I've got a clean XP install. I'd like to make Shareport work.

Thanks!
-Aaron

I did not unplug and plugin anything. just happens out of the blue.

This is purely a Windows issue.

The error (symbols) is not important, that's a debugging error since the debug symbols and tools are not automatically installed in Windows. More info: http://www.windowsbbs.com/general-discussions/33471-dump-data-collection-tool-instructions.html

I think this might be a RAM issue (defective or overclocked) or a power supply issue (not enough/unstable watts or amps) or a conflict with another loaded driver. Could be a hardware driver, but also Antivirus drivers are reputed to interfere a quite lot with installed networking devices.

There's not enough info to go looking for the error. In order to do so we realy need the debugging logs.

Hey EddieZ,

If you tell me how to make the debugging logs then I will do so.

Though I find it strange that you refer to it as a windows problem although the dumpfile clearly references the DlinkUDSMBus.sys.

I managed to make a debugfile.

It is in the attachment. Would be really nice when you could take a look at it.

edit: was not able to upload the attachment: "The attachments upload directory is not writable. Your attachment or avatar cannot be saved."

Here it is pasted:

The reason why this is a Windows issue is because Windows tends to have regular problems with .sys drivers. If it was a generic Shareport driver issue then Windows should react accordingly on all installed platforms. And that is does not do. You are activating the Dlink driver and that causes a conflict in Windows. This cause a driver issue: the driver may try to occupy a memoryspace that is corrupted on the RAM module or it just conflicts with another driver that is installed.

This is the essence of the error that everybody can understand: "Typically this is at a bad IRQL level or double freeing the same allocation"

Looking at the error log, you could try updating the Intel chipset driver. You can find it here: www.statio-drivers.co.

You also could do a Memtest to see if your RAM is still 100% OK.

Ah I get your explanation about the windows issue..

I bought this pc a few months ago so I doubt there is a problem with the ram, I will give updating the intel chipset drivers ago.

THough I have to say that the problems started after installing the shareport program, so in essence I would say that is the base of the problem, since no other programs or drivers have problems with it.

Even brand new RAM can be faulty, so there's no golden rule to hang on to.
You could also try deinstalling the Shareport app and manually delete the 2 Dlink .sys files in c:\windows\system32\drivers
And reinstall.

This is the Microsoft explaination. IMHO, the Dlink driver is only the 'catalyst'.

"This problem may occur when you have NetBIOS transport enabled. In a bug that exists in Netbt.sys, a Unicode string is initialized to a static string and then freed inside the NbtReadSingleParameter function. The BAD_POOL_CALLER (C2) error indicates that the current thread is making a bad pool request. Typically, this request occurs at an incorrect interrupt request (IRQ) level, or it is caused by the freeing of a memory allocation that has already been freed."

Allright,

I updated the chipset, uninstalled the program, installed a new version (ftp://ftp.dlink.com/Gateway/dir655/Apps/SharePort_Network_USB_Utility_114.zip)..

Let see what happens in the next week :)

thnx for the support EddieZ

I'm having trouble with newest version of Shareport:

Wireless laptop running Vista Home Premium x86 sees it and can connect (to an Epson R340 printer).
Wired desktop running Server 2003 x86 sees nothing.

Also tested other devices with same result.

I've uninstalled/reinstalled twice, deleted fragments, rebooted, etc, to no avail.

Suggestions?

Windows 2003 firewall (or 3rd party) ? Got VM installed?
The solution is within the OS.

Hello Eddie,

I should have mentioned that the router name and IP don't appear at the top of my Shareport menu.

I agree that the solution is in the OS, but do you have any suggestions? I originally installed with Windows Firewall turned off, but then I uninstalled, looked for fragment .sys files (there weren't any), turned on Windows Firewall, reinstalled Shareport (and noticed the exceptions it added and made sure they were "checked"). Still no luck. There is nothing else installed, even AV. The OS install is clean, also.

I compared registries between the Server 2003 machine that doesn't work and my Vista Premium machine that does work, but nothing really jumped out at me.

I searched a bit more through the forums, and noticed that someone else had the same problem as I do (with the router and IP not showing up, and Sharepoint not working) - it was mentioned to them that "something was blocking Sharepoint... etc", but I just don't know what that could be. I don't think their issue was ever resolved, either.

Thanks for any help or insight you or others might offer, as I'm out of ideas.

I have experienced this behaviour when resuming from sleep mode. Exiting Shareport and enabling wireless again (and restarting Shareport) solves it every time. So I'm convived it has something to do with the wireless connection in Windows.
Title: Re: SharePort USB utility experience
Post by: AndrewRing on February 09, 2009, 01:28:27 PM
In that case, I have a different problem - as I noted above, the problem exists only on my wired Server 2003 Standard PC, independent of my wireless laptop (and whether it is turned on or not).

So to reiterate, I can turn on the wired Server 2003 PC and SP will not function. I can disable, re-enable, turn it upside down and shake it all I like, but I still never see the name and IP on the right-click menu of the wired PC.

But as soon as I turn on my wireless laptop, BAM, it's there - but only on the wireless laptop.

I'm going to call D-link tech support and see if they have any suggestions. Lycan, do you have a minute or sixty to look at this?

I should also mention that I don't use sleep mode at all.

Title: Re: SharePort USB utility experience
Post by: EddieZ on February 09, 2009, 01:43:17 PM
That it occurs with my wireless network doesn't mean I can not occur with wired networks. That would indicate a general network (driver) issue. Perhaps a driver (re-)load sequence that is messing with the Shareport driver (which needs a network driver to be loaded to effectuate the connection part that is missing from your right click view).

Tried reinstalling your NIC and Shareport afterwards?

Eddie,

A good suggestion, but no luck here. I even made sure I have the latest network driver (I do). I uninstalled SP, rebooted, uninstalled network, rebooted, reinstalled network, rebooted, then reinstalled SP. No joy.

Does anyone know if it relies on a particular setting within the 655's configuration? Like the other poster with this problem, the only relevant setting I can find (Setup -> USB Settings) is set to "Network USB" with a "Network USB Detection" interval of 30 seconds.

Also, I have an A4, if that means anything to anyone.

Does this bad boy rely on any specific Windows services that I should make sure are running?

I have exactly the same problem. 1 desktop with XP SP3 wired: SharePort doesn't work.
1 desktop with XP SP3 wireless with DWA 140 adapter: works perfect.
And: 1 laptop wireless with Vista Home premium: also works perfect. I have removed SharePort and installed it again on the wired desktop: same problem. If I want to switch this computer off I get a warning that SharePort is still running and canīt be closed by Windows. I have to choose stop this program immediately to shut off the computer. Anyone an idea??

Guessing some kind of driver issue. If you have VMware or other virtualisation package running there are bound te be problems with the drivers.

Hello Edgarz,

Thanks for the quick reaction.
I have checked the PC and removed a lot of stuff. Couldn't find anything like VMware or something like that. Still Shareport doesn't work. At start up of the computer the symbol comes up green during a very short time. If I connect immediately a device from the pop up screens it works. But if I wait a minute the symbol turns red and stays red, and: it is not possible to stop the program. I have to go in task manager to stop it.
Do you have any further suggestions??

This is quite a difficult issue because it is caused by a driver conflict in Windows,

Are you sure you don't have any firewall or portblocking applications active? It looks like the connection is being reset after initial contact.

I wish I am having a better time with it then what seems you guys and gals seem to be. On all computers that we have it running I find more of the stations going from green to red and back again. But for the most time it stays red. I have a Maxtor 750 Gb USB drive connected to the port. Them some times right it the middle of a tranfer we will find the data only have moved then it flakes out. I sure would like to know what i have overlooked. Anyways that is our experence with it. Anybody want to chime in and all connections are hardwired.

All's fine here the last couple of months (wired)

One observation though with the new 1.22beta firmware is that Shareport connection through wireless is disconnected and connected automatically when engaging a printer. No log showng disconnection of any kind...

Has anyone tried USB Audio with any success?
I have a creative sound blaster X-fi 5.1 usb sound card and it does not show up in the list of devices to connect to. Is there any update or remedy?
I am actually on DIR-825 and the last firmware (2.05NA i believe).
My other devices connect quiet normally, except that the hard disk transfer rates are not that great (~4MBps).
Thanks,

Mine does not work. It prints blank pages, scrambled text and broken images. That was the reason I picked this model, I needed to share a printer with out leaving a computer running all the time.

Does not matter wired computer or wireless, win xp, vista or win 7.

Try updating your printer driver. Or else reinstall it. Looks a printer spooler issue.

for those who can't detect any devices connected in the usb port using shareport versions 3.1, 1.15 and 1.17, use the 1.17b01 setup. I am using a dir-655 with 2.00 rev B and it worked for me. Max length of usb cable you can use is 5meters. I tried it with a flash drive using a USB male to female + the flash drive and it works fine. But using an external HDD does not work because the configuration would be USB male to female + usb male to micro usb + external HDD = 5m+ of cable. I have yet to try use a 5m cable for my printer.

I'm using a windows 7 x64
