A guy walks into a hotel room with a dir505.........
« on: January 04, 2013, 11:21:42 PM »

Just got this 505 and want it to work at the hotel i'm staying at, but the manual? Not much help there. After talking to three geeks, we think i want wifi hotspot mode, correct? I have done the set up wizard, and now I'm at the wifi hotspot set up section.
It states
'Use this section to configure the Wi-Fi HotSpot settings for your D-Link Wi-Fi HotSpot. Please select a Wi-Fi HotSpot to join by click the Site Survey button and enter the password of the Wi-Fi HotSpot Network'

So do site survey, find and i select my hotels wifi (, i have their password) and press select. Nowhere do I see a 'enter password' opportunity on this page or the page that follows.

So that is where i am stuck, make it simple, a guy walks into a hotel with a 505, what are the steps to set up, like you actually would do it in the real world.

I don't have one of these at hand to confirm this, but I suspect that once you press select, you'll get a pop-up window asking for the password. This would be the expected response to the DIR-505 trying to join the hotels wifi without the (correct) password.

You might want to try Repeater mode as well. You'll need the PW, if any, that is used by the hotel or given by the hotel at the front desk.

Fuzzynutz, thanks for replying, i want to work through this.

Your seggestion that I try repeater mode? Does this mean that wifi hotspot mode is not the correct mode for the situation of a hotel, where i can join their network and I know the password ? Yes or no.

Do you have access to a dir 505? If you walk through the set up steps in wifi hotspot setup, it ask you to choose a network, I do, and to put in a password, but nowhere on the page is a space asking for password.
Can you check this out, i want it to work. Thanks

Yes try using the 505 as a repeater and it should have you input the SSID and PW that the front desk gives you.

What browser are you using?
Try Opera or FF? If IE 8 or 9, set compatibility mode and test again.

wi-fi hotspot mode will be a little more secure for you, and should work based on my testing.
if the hotel signal is open, then simply select it from the available signals and say connect. Then name your ssid and set the password for you connection to the 505. save your changes
let it reboot, then connect to your 5005 ssid. Once connected, force  the hotel landing page to come up by manually attempting to surf to a site like google.  On the hotels page, enter in your access password given by the front desk.

Hotspot mode works fine for this. I've used my 505 at many hotels so far...

What are you exactly trying to do with this device? Are you trying to turn a wired connection from the hotel into a wireless connection? Or turn a wireless connection into a wired connection? I personally suggest the former, since if the wireless signal is low, adding a repeater really won't make it any better unless your trying to reach a certian dead zone in your room.

Also, there are two common types of hotel Wifi. Usually smaller hotels will have a network secured with some type of security (WEP/WPA) and the front desk gives you the password. Others, usally larger hotels, will have a open network, and instead will use a redirect to a hotel splash page that will ask for a access code or perhaps name/room number. I know this was already stated, but just wanted to be clear, which method does your hotel use?

The DIR-505 will do both of those things.

I know it will do both things, but he is asking for help to get the device to work so the logical question is what exactly he is trying to get it to do yes?

I think it's clear from the text of his post that the hotel offers wireless service (talks about finding the wireless in the site survey, etc.)

Ok, let me give it a try.

Guy walks into a hotel room. He sets the switch on the DIR-505 to "Hotspot" mode and plugs it in. When the DIR-505's wireless comes up (a minute or two after the green LED lights), he connects to the 505's wireless. Then either using the QRS app or by going to "dlinkrouter", he gets to the admin page and logs in. He uses the wizard to walk through setting up hotspot mode, which includes the site survey and selecting the desired access point.

Now here is where there are several possibilities. Most hotel wireless is "open" - no password to associate with the access point - so in this case the 505 won't prompt him for a password. If it is "locked", then the 505 will prompt him.  Either way, he completes the wizard and the 505 reboots. (He can also manually select the access point without going through the wizard.

Now he connects again to the 505 and, in a web browser, goes to any non-secure web page (I like to use weather.gov). If the hotel's wireless is truly open, he'll get to the site and he's done. But more lilkely the request gets intercepted by the hotel's system and some sort of login page appears. This is where he enters the login information provided by the hotel (usually a password, sometimes room number and name.) After successfully submitting the form, Internet access is granted and he's in.

Sorry for the long delay, been off traveling. I still cannot get it to connect. I have put in the disk and read the manual, watched the youtube video, still i can't make this work.

Heres what i'm doing, from the beginning:
I'm using a old hp laptop, windows xp,  with wireless  wifi.
My hotel has wifi, with a password, i get about 2 bars.
I pressed the 'reset' button to start from fresh, dlink 505 indicator light turns red, than after about a minute, turns green.
I go to internet connections, it shows me connected to the hotels internet and has my dlink listed as an option.
I connect to the dlink, then open page dlinkrouter in foxfire.
Wifi connection setup wizardpage opens, i click next
Select wifi hotspot page appears and it scans.
Another 'Select wifi hotspot' page appears with a choice of wifi names appears, i select my hotels wifi (70%), wifi security 'wpa2-psk' and click connect.
Page 'enter wifi password' appears, i put in password provided by hotel, click next.
Page 'please enter wifi network name for the extended network' appears, i change name to my wifi, and putin a password.
Set up complete page appears showing:
wifi network name (ssid): the name the hotels wifi
Wifi password: showing the name of the hotels password
Extended wifi network name (ssid) : mywifi
Wifi password: my password
I click save, to save setting and reboot.
Rebooting page comes on, dlink light stays green, rebooting counts down.
Wifi connection set up wizard page appears again, the same one i started at.

I look at my wifi connections, no 'mywifi', the  dlink-78c7 is still connected, so i start again, go through it all the same way, after reboot a page comes up,  foxfire says ' cannot connect'
I go to network connection, and see that there is now no 'my wifi' and no dlink-78c7, but i am connected to the hotels wifi network, at one bar.
Any help?

Hello, redid it all again after lunch and it works. Got 'mywifi' in the network menu and it connected to a foxfire webpage. Don't know what i did different, possible it was waiting after the reboot longer. Thanks for all the help. Rick
