File transfer speeds not consistent
« on: July 26, 2012, 05:52:28 AM »

I've just recently got my DNS-320, but am noticing a weird thing when transferring files to/from it accross the network. My network is running through a 100mb router, which i've never had any slow speeds from, yet when transferring files with the DNA-320, i've yet to consistently get the same kinds of speeds each time. I've had speeds as low as 2mb/s and then i've had hights of 10mb/s (if you can call that a high), but then i've also had varying speeds from 4-6mb/s. There seems no reason for the random speeds used. Have tested this on wired and wireless connections and made sure that there is nothing else using the router's connection so that the full bandwidth is available and found no pattern. Is there some way this can be set to always use the full speed available?

Try using a new network cable.  A defective cable can easily cause the throughput results you're observing. Wireless transfer speeds should be significantly lower than wired.

Also file size impacts on speed. If you want to test speed then use the same file over and over. NAS Tester will do that for you.

What is NAS Tester? Never came across it before.

Yeah I already tried changing the cables on both the NAS and the wired PC's on the network, no change. Still just no consistency on any pc with the speed, it's like the NAS just selects a speed randomly and then says "i'm just going to stick at that" when there's more bandwidth available.

First, test the DNS-320 performance on a different client PC to remove the PC network card/drivers as a possible cause.

If the results are the same, then try directly connecting the DNS-320 and client PC to a dedicated GB switch to eliminate the router as the possible cause. Does the router have QoS enabled that could be throttling the throughput?

The Speed with my dns320 also vary.
Sometime write is faster, sometimes read.
Between 10 and 20 MByte per second.
When ahdvd writes 10mb, i assume he mean 10MB/s = 80 Mbit.
80 Mbit is not bad for a 100mbit router.

Thanks for the link. I'll test out the app.  ;)
