Then maybe could they put a resource monitor for CPU/RAM to know when the available resources are consumed/occupied  and maybe even what process are doing this (top 5 at least) ; maybe users are activating features they could live without if it would improve USB disk performance if they knew what these are .
Or just leave us figure it out by ourselves by giving us root SSH/Telnet access to our devices ( block SSH/Telnet in the firewall from the WAN interface if the reason is to not have the routers hacked )

I agree!

D-Link has confirmed this is a hardware issue and cannot be fixed via firmware unfortunately. It is a memory issue.

Well, time to sell this router then.

In that case I would like to see results from the DIR 2660 router which is basically the same router just with more NAND (128 MB vs 16) and more RAM (256 MB vs 128 MB) .
If that one performs well then it's indeed a resource issue ; if not then maybe software .

Testing my 2660:
Read seems to hover around upper 40MBs.

Write seem to hover around upper 20MBs

Speeds were immediate and constant. Didn't see any thing near single digit MBs at all.

My opinion (not speaking for D-Link) Remember the USB function on most routers on the market is secondary. If you need to stream high-quality movies or a lot of data, it is much better to get a NAS or connect a USB drive to a PC and run software. Expecting a router to function and perform the same as a NAS is unrealistic, especially if you have more than 10 wireless devices connected. Having a ton of rules, port forwarding, QoS enabled, etc eats up the memory and CPU.

@FurryNutz 10x for the swift reply/test ; those numbers seem almost identical to what I was getting (so I'm  guessing that's about as much as the CPU can handle in terms of storage duties ) when it worked as it should , mostly right after connecting devices ( as far as I remember read performance doesn't get degraded or at least not by much ) . The real test would be to leave the USB drive/HDD connected for roughly 24 h and repeat the test .
Regarding the use of dedicated NAS devices ,  @GreenBay42 you're preaching to the choir ( QNAP 251+ owner here ) ; it would just have been nice to be able to recommend it to others who might need only basic SMB sharing features but with a decent performance (15-20 MB/s write/read sustained performance would have been more than sufficient for most people's needs ) as otherwise it's wireless performance is still top notch for the price .

I'll leave the 2660 and USB drive on today and check back tomorrow. I had turned it off so I just turned it back on. Nothing connected. I'll connect up my wired PC tomorrow again and re-test to see if anything changes.

I can't fully test the 2660 out live as I have other routers and wifi I'm currently using. This one test with with the wifi disabled. I'll check tomorrow again and run a quick test with wifi enabled to see if anything changes.

So we had a power outage last Friday. So I came back and left the DIR-2660 online and had one PC connected to it.
Speeds are still working well after leaving it online since Friday. Just tested it a bit ago.

1st >> Thanks @FurryNutz for taking the time to do the tests
2nd >> Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli ruls
3rd >> I think we have our answer ; unfortunately the DIR 882 does seems to be RAM/ROM starved to be able to provide decent USB storage write performance (read performance is comparable at 40+ MB/s however the write remains mostly capped at ~7 MB/s)

So for those 882 users who need USB drive support with good performance, you'll need to find other alternatives to resolve the 882's USB drive issue, either find a different method to connect your USB drives to a networking adapter or try out a DIR-2660. That model seems stable and solid for USB drive support.
Sounds like D-Link can't fix the 882 issue. Is a shame.  :-\

I bought this router to cover the other half of my Home, It's pretty good but speeds are inconsistent and fluctuates between 380-500 mbps.

Well regarding NAS, It's a regret for the owners of this model. I'm thinking of getting the EA8500 Linksys next if in case I plan to sell this.

Since R7800 is out of stock everywhere, I might give the Linksys a shot. TP-Link is cheap and ASUS has Overheating issues so I'll avoid them.

The 882 does have the one fault. Other than this. The 882 is pretty solid.

Regarding the USB drive, USB drives are not considered NAS. NAS refers to actual Network Access Storage devices. A device that has two or more internal HDD and is connected via network LAN cable. For some users with USB storage needs with this router, I would highly recommend reviewing some actual NAS devices. You can get into NAS moderately inexpensively. I've been using NAS for several years now and have not looked back. So much more configurable and flex it over USB drives. Lots of features too. I just installed a 16Tb NAS last weekend. Going to be used for Data Backup with redundancy. I wish D-Link still produced NAS.  :(

I gave up on Linksys years ago. After there FW update debacle on there WRT1900AC router, that was it for me. Belkin owns Linksys. I would not recommend anything TP-Link due to there nefarious business practices.  :-X
I've never had any heating problems with my two ASUS routers. My GT-AX11000 works wonderfully.
