Connection Problems

Sometimes my D-Link router gets very slow, but doesn't drop the connection. I am constantly lagging on Xbox Live and it is starting to get very annoying. I haven't changed any of the settings from when i first set it up because I didn't know if it would mess up my problems even more. Can anyone help me with what settings I should have?
