Problem of slow down with DNS resolution
« on: March 01, 2009, 11:49:38 AM »

Hi all,

I leave in belgium (europe) and i just bougth a DIR-655 router yesterday.
I install it today and could immediately observe that it takes several second to reach a web side.
I think i'm experiencing the DNS resolution slowdown problem explained in the following post http://forums.dlink.com/index.php?topic=2737.0.
Apparently, the solution to that problem is to upgrade the firmware to version 1.21b11_beta2 or to downgrade to version 1.11.

Unfortunately, my router is a DIR-655EU HW version A4 with firmware version 1.20.
Hardware version A4 does not accept a downgrade to firmware version 1.11.
Also, though it is not very clear, it seems that EU version can't be flashed with US firmware version!

On the DLINK belgium side, the latest firmware proposed is 1.21b05.

My questions are the following:

1) Does the 1.21b05 firmware solve the DNS resolution problem?
2) If not, can i flash firmware 1.21b11_beta 2 in my DIR-655 europeen version?

Thanks.

1. Yes
2. You can use the WEU version and the US version. Apart from some extra languages (no dutch) yjere is no difference

Get the 1.22B05 version by the way (ftp.Dlink.com)

Thanks for the answer.

I have tried the 3 firmware.
For now, i will keep firmware 1.22B05.

After some trial, I'm not sure that the DNS resolution problem is completely solved.
Most of the web sites respond quickly now, but some of them are still slow to answer.
Those sites were sites that my old router was accessing faster than this router.

In belgium, it is late now.
I will continue my investigation tomorrow.
I will also get the feedback of my familly concerning the fluidity of their online game.

DNS issue ghas been resolved completely. It's really simple to test  :)

Remember that latency can be caused by a lot of elements in the cycle (BT traffic on LAN, provider/line quality, provider dns, webserver). Just set OpenDNS as DNS, that will eliminate the provider's DNS server.

Now that i have a new DIR-655 router, I just replaced my old modem/router by a simple modem with only one ethernet port.
For the time beeing, everythink seems to run very fast.
I hope this will continue!

Thanks for your help.
