uPNP AV server refresh hangs @ 93%
« on: March 28, 2009, 04:38:01 AM »

I cannot refresh the AV server.
It will hang at 93% every time.
I have tried share root, and also try share specific folder.  Same issue.
I can see the NAS on my PS3, and see folders, but says "no file" for music, and "corrupted" for video.
Is there a GB size limit or limit on number of files for shared folder?
I have tried reset and reconfigure + reset and load CFG and same issue.
As per other post am also getting random system non-responsive.
Have 3 x WD 1 TB drive, raid 5.
Firmware 1.02
Any ideas?

Further testing showed that sharing a folder with 10 files refresh was ok, but if I try and share root (450GB), or my A/V collection, it bombs out.
I increased gui timeouts also - no effect.

So appears there are limitations on how much you can share that is not documented or advertised?

I'm not aware of any limits for UPnP AV.

I have shared root and that has about 700GB of media files.
I'm also running firmware 1.0.2, but with 4x1.5TB Samsung Drives.
Have you tried turning auto refresh on and then wait a few hours? Then check if your PS3 shows some files?

Have tried auto refresh - can see files on PS3 but getting DLNP? error 2101 or similar - can`t replicate as away from PS3 atm.  Either that or cannot load any media.

When I manual refresh, the popup status will hang on progress.  Eventually gives error "There was a problem with the request" popup in IE.

Have tried reset NAS and re-configure - same.

Don`t know why NAS is falling over as no log files.

NAS will intermittently lock up as in responds to a ping, but cannot access via mapped drive or access firmware and this occurs when AV server enabled also which has got me confused.

After I first set this up (2 or so weeks ago) I did stream an AVi to PS3.  However cannot play MP3`s at all.

I am only sharing 250GB of media, and root totals 450GB when sharing.

When sharing root, refresh stalls at 75%.

Another thought was is there any sort of filename format that is invalid that could be causing NAS to hang when it gets to that file?  eg too many chars, invalid chars in name etc??

Should I try a different firmware?  Is 1.02b from DLINK AU site atm.

How can I rollback firmware - where can I obtain different img files?

Well I thought I would stop losing sleep over this and apply that time not sleeping to trying to isolate this issue.

Am still in the process of doing it, but I can get 100% refresh with certain media/files shared.

My theory about file name size/formatting/length is where I am thinking the issue lies.
I have renamed most of my media, and have narrowed the cause of the hang (Geez wish there was logging...) down to a dozen folders.

Will update when I pinpoint the cause.  (Time consuming as have to add 1 folder to share at a time, refresh, wait......then success or fail.)

Well it had to be in the "Metal" music collection folder...

The mp3 properties had a comment field for each track of a specific album.  I deleted the comments for each file, saved, refreshed and disco.

All sorted!!!

This issue can be caused by a corrupt file and cause the UPnP AV media server to halt on refreshing it is designed not to halt by this but to just skip the file however it can still happen in some cases. You just need to locate the problem file and remove it. Try refreshing each folder and find the one that halts the refresh.

As stated above, files were not corrupt, but file properties all had a comment field entry that was causing the refresh to stall.

As soon as I removed the comment, could refresh fine.

At first I thought it was the file name itself, but re-naming had no effect.

Unsure why comment was causing stalling, I assume that server didn`t understand this meta data, unless hidden characters, however many other files I have include comments, and have no issues.

Biggest challenge with identifying the problem file(s) is that there is no specific error - ie only message is generic "operation could not be completed" and the fact refresh has stalled at xx%.  And the fact that there is no logging means you have to try and isolate what is causing.  ie what did I just add recently that may have caused this.

In my case I added a lot of data, so was time consuming.

Thank you for your input I will test this out and verify if just adding a simple comment will cause this halt refreshing.

Like I said, I have a myriad of other files that have comments and all share fine.  Some comments are quite long also, but it appears to be if there are 2 files with SAME comments, that issue occurs.
There had to be something specific to the comments in these 12 files that was causing epic fail.

The exact verbatim comment I had to remove is
"Brought to You by N00N3"

Now if I share ANY 1 mp3 with that comment intact, refresh is fine.
BUT if I copy that same file, rename it so have 2 files with the same verbatim comment - refresh stalls.
AND if I select 2 different mp3 files which have the exact verbatim comment - refresh stalls.

Either way, having discovered this I would have to say this is a pretty freakish incident, one to be mindful of, but freakish..

I tried it with my mp3's files and I cant replicate it just by adding the same comment into multiple mp3s. I also did this and copied the list and pasted it over so there are 2 copies of the list and it is still refreshing successful.  ???

I just tried again  - and can replicate.

What firmware version are you using?  Mine is DNS343.1.02b10

I am testing using any 2 of the 12 tracks in a folder and sharing that only - will lock at 8%, maybe 50% sometimes but will not complete the refresh.

As soon as I delete the comments, refreshes fine.

Maybe there is something corrupt about these files or the verbatim comment?

Anyway, works for me now as long as remove the comments from this one album.  Effectively issue is with my media - weird...

Hmm...Yeah I don't know about that firmware thats not the firmware we use so I don't know. But I did not see the issue as you see it with the 1.02 official US firmware unless it is something your specific files.
