Why Port Forwarding/Virtual Server limited to 15 ports?
« on: January 13, 2015, 11:55:41 AM »

This is a high end router for D-Link, but for whatever reason they decided you can only setup port forwarding/virtual server for up to 15 ports. Is there a way to send a feature request to Dlink? Also, they are calling it virtual server, but it's actually port forwarding. Seems like they got it backwards. On Netgear it was the other way.

Maybe high end however still a home class router. Average home class users may not have a need for that many rules. Home class routers have a limited amount of resources per model that the FW and features uses.

Port forwarding allows traffic requests from a specified application to be directed to a specified client inside. Virtual servers are preset port mappings for  services, like a web or e-mail server, that route traffic to a specified client inside.

I recommend that you phone contact your regional D-Link support office and ask for help and information regarding this. We find that phone contact has better immediate results over using email.
Let us know how it goes please.

I consider myself a slightly more then an average user, but not anywhere near to be enterprise/business user. I simply have 6 IP cameras that I need to port forward 3 ports for each cam (HTTP, RTSP & Server) That's already 18 port forwards! On top of that I need to port forward my pc, nas, so I could get by with 20 port forwards, but 15... All other comparable home routers from Asus, Netgear, Linksys allow more then that, why did Dlink have to limit theirs?

You would have to ask D-Link that question.

6 cameras is a fair amount of cameras for the average home user as well. Most home users have maybe 3-4 max. I only have one. The other forum moderator has 3 I think.

If it means anything, even the DNS-322L, a dedicated DVR for D-Link cameras can only support 9 cameras for recording, so there are limits imposed.

I must be geeking to much. I have 11 dlink cams and 3 more dlink in boxes, 2 ftp boxes online (iusbport) with 2 more ready to go (iusbport2).

All working and configured on the DIR-880L?

Have you set up any Port Forward rules for your cameras? All of them?

This user seems to be configuring external services for his 6 cameras.

Any configuration informration maybe helpful.

Can that box handle more or does it degrade?

Sounds like the router doesn't have enough internal memory to store more user defined options

25 would've been just fine. I am not sure how many Netgear r7000 offers, but it was enough for 21 port forwards that I had.

I'd call up D-Link and ask them specifically which model router they recommend that you could use with your 6 cameras. Some of D-Links cameras don't need any port forwarding services and use Cloud services to help with router resources. Tell them what you have and your specific needs. Maybe they have something that will fit your needs. Let us know how it goes.

The specs indicate 9 and I'm fairly certain the ceiling is enforced through the device.

I read the user manual for this router. It says in there max of 15.
