I recently installed a DSR-250 and have everything set up and working the way I want it to.  However, when I try go to a new site or click on a link it frequently fails to load the webpage.  I am confused as to why it is timing out while trying to resolve hostnames.

I am currently using Google's DNS server (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4), I also have the same problem when using my local ISP's DNS servers.  I am also not totally convinced that it is a DNS issue.  I receive  time outs when using nslookup and I also receive timeouts when pinging IP addresses directly.

I have ruled out any of my other network equipment.  I have hooked up my old router and do not have any issues when using it, the problem is in the DSR-250.

• What region are you located?
• Was a Factory Reset performed before and after any firmware updates then set up from scratch?

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations

• What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
• What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?
• What ISP Modem service link speeds UP and Down do you have?
• Check ISP MTU requirements, Cable is usually 1500, DSL is around 1492 down to 1472. Call the ISP and ask. Link>Checking MTU Values
• For DSL/PPPoE connections on the router, ensure that "Always ON" option is enabled.

Router and Wired Configurations

• Turn off Advanced DNS Services if you have this option under Setup/Internet/Manual or under Setup/PARENTAL CONTROL/Set to>None: Static IP or Obtain Automatically From ISP.
• Enable Use Unicasting (compatibility for some ISP DHCP Servers).
• Turn OFF DNS Relay under Setup/Networking. Link>Finding Faster DNS Addresses using Name Bench
• Setup DHCP reserved IP addresses for all devices ON the router. Setup/Networking. This ensures each devices gets its own IP address when turned on and connected, eliminates IP address conflicts and helps in troubleshooting.
• Ensure devices are set to auto obtain an IP address.
• WAN Port Speed set to Auto or specific speed? Some newer ISP modems support 1000Mb so manually setting to Gb speeds can be supported by the router.
• Set current Time Zone, Date and Time. Use an NTP Server feature.

I am located in the United States.
I have done a factory reset, firmware update, factory reset and then set up from scratch.  I re-accomplished this step again.


My ISP is Cox Communications, Cable.
Motorola SURFboard SB614.
50 Mbps down/10Mbps up.
MTU is 1500 and set to 1500.


I have no Advanced DNS Services option.
DNS Relay is turned off.
Reserved addresses are setup.
All clients are configured to optain IP address through DHCP.
WAN port speed is set to auto, it did correctly identify a 1 Gbps connection to my modem.
Date/Time/Zone are correctly set and NTP is enable.

I am still being affect by this issue.  Here is a link to my current config file:

Try setting WAN port speed to 1000Mb as the SB 6141 support Gb connections....

Try using the Name Bench to find good working DNS for your area...

I have the WAN port manually set to 1000 Mb and I have updated my DNS settings based the recommendation from Name Bench.  Unfortunately, I am still having issues with intermittent time outs.

Is there any logs that would be helpful to pull from the console?

And the clients have reserved IPs and are getting the manual new DNS IPs from the router?

Ensure you clear the DNS cache from the PCs...
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /renew
For Windows PCs...

I'd be curious if you connected 1 PC to the ISP modem and by pass the router as a test and see if you exhibit the same thing...

Also I recommend that you have your ISP check the cabling going to the ISP modem, check signal levels going to the ISP modem. Check for t.v. line splitters and remove them as they can introduce noise on the line and lower the signal going to the ISP modem. Connecting to the ISP modem could result in a false positive as the signal to the modem could be just enough to that point then adding on a router, could see problems. The router operation is dependent upon getting good data flow from the ISP modem and the modem is dependent upon getting good signal from the ISP Service.

All clients have received their reserved IP address and all DNS information has been refreshed.  If I install my old router everything works fine.  Laptop connected to the modem directly also works fine.  Signal strength to modem is fine. There are no splitters installed and the last time the ISP tech was out, he removed the filter from the service hook-up box.

Is this router installed in a home or business?

What is the Mfr of the old router?

I'll recommend that you phone contact D-Link support for immediate help and information on this. I think we've done all we can here. Please phone contact D-Link support, don't use email. This needs higher level support. If they can't figured it out, RMA maybe needed. Please reference this thread as well.

I am using this in my house.  I was previously using a MediaLink MWN-WAPR150N router with the wireless features turned off.  I have a Cisco AIR-SAP1602E-A-K9 wireless access point for my wireless needs and then a D-Link DGS-1024D switch to tie everything together.

I will give D-Link support a call and let you know the results.  Thanks for the help.

Wow, all this for home. Ok. well, just be aware that this router was designed for business class environments, so I'm not sure if this router would fit your needs and maybe could be impacting proper operation. Please ask them about this and see what they recommend. Hope they can get it working for you. If not, I would recommend a DIR series class router for home use.

My setup is a bit overkill.  Before I started upgrading my network, I had issues caused by three adults watching HD content on different devices at the same time.  Now I have gigabit Ethernet wired throughout my house for all of the PCs/consoles and the AP for all of the mobile devices/laptops.  Just need Google to put fiber in my area.

So for the result of contacting D-Link Tech Support.
Under Advanced/Advanced Network/Attack Checks they had me disable:
Block TCP flood under WAN Security Checks
Block UDP flood under LAN Security Checks
Block ICMP Notification under ICSA Settings

The problem seems to be resolved now.  Even though I had a firewall rule that allowed all traffic from the LAN to WAN, these settings seemed to ignore that rule and were causing my issues.

I hate to dredge up old topics, but this problem has been bugging me for over a week. Google finally got me here, and I can confirm the same solution works on the DSR-1000N with this problem.
