Roku TV only connects via Guest Zone
« on: December 12, 2015, 07:02:09 PM »

Have a DIR-655, Rev. A2 HW, Firmware 1.35.  I've been trying to hook up a Roku TV via wireless and have had lots of problems.  It will connect to the wireless network just fine but won't connect to the local network or internet at all.  I have a reserved DHCP address for the TV.  Settings are:

Channel 11
Mixed g & n modes
Auto 20/40 MHz
Auto WPA or WPA2
TKIP and AES

However, when I set up a Guest Zone the Roku connects quickly and perfectly using the same settings.

I don't have this problem with any other wireless device, but I have a similar issue with another Roku 3 that works intermittently on the normal zone.

I''m thinking there's something set that doesn't affect the guest zone, but have no clue what it might be.  Any hints on what I can try?

Thanks.

Try setting it to WPA2 only and AES only. Anything N and over can do AES, and the Roku is probably struggling with TKIP handshake.

Do you have any Wifi G devices? If not, also set your radio to N only.

Thanks.  Don't think I tried the WPA2 and AES only on the normal settings.  I know I tried them on the guest zone and it worked fine, but the WPA and TKIP also worked on the guest zone.  I'll try anything at this point.

Might try as a quick test, disable all WPA on the router and see if the Roku will connect to the routers main SSID name and see. Let us know what you find out.
Re-enable WPA after testing.

Set the main zone to WPA2 and AES.  Roku TV wouldn't connect, Roku 3 connected OK.
Set guest zone to WPA2 and AES.  Both Rokus connected OK.
Disabled all WPA on main zone.  Roku TV connected fine.
Re-enabled WPA2 and AES on main zone.  Roku TV connected fine.

Weird.  Now it's working and I'm using the same settings that didn't work 5 minutes before.   ???

Possible hang up on the WPA either on the router or the Roku. Sounds like it working now.

Enjoy.  ;)

So much for that.  It's back to connecting to the router wireless but not the local network. >:(

Try resetting the Roku via Settings>System>Factory reset. WARNING: This will reset all the settings, so only do this if you know all the info/settings saved on the device. This will erase any old settings which may be clogging things up in the Roku.

Also, it seems like the "Roku TV" is the device causing the most problem. What model is it? My guess is it isn't compatible with fully compatible with AES. When you had the Roku TV connected via WPA, was it set to WPA2 Only?

Just to clarify, the main difference between WPA and WPA2 is WPA2 forces the connection to use AES. WPA can use either TKIP or AES, depending on configuration. WPA/WPA2 or Auto WPA is when the router will first try to connect with AES and fall back to TKIP if it fails. For this reason, I don't understand how WPA2 only can be configured with TKIP. Probably just a UI typo. I mention this because this fall back I think has something to do with the Roku TV connecting, and then disconnecting.

WPA2 from what I can tell, can set Auto TPIK or AES on DIR series routers. Old generation routers have this ability. Maybe a compatibility process. I presume maybe this standard changed since then on newer generation routers possibly.

I recommend manually setting WPS2/AES only configurations on older generation routers as most newer generation devices support AES fully.

It was working fine right after I set the main zone to WPA2 and AES only and also disabled the password.  Then I just re-enabled the password as FirryNutz suggested and it was working just fine.  This was for about two days.  Then I got the bright idea to disable the guest zone since I didn't need it.  As soon as I hit the "Save Settings" button I lost the connection to the Roku TV.  I can always get the Roku to report a connection to the wireless network, but it won't connect to the local network or internet.

I've rebooted everything multiple times and reset to factory settings a bunch of times.  I've disabled the Roku pinging the network and it made no difference either.

It's back to fully connecting to the guest network zone only.  Not the main zone.  I have the settings for both zones set identical also.  I know a lot of people are complaining about wireless connection issues with Roku and Roku TV, but the frustrating part is I can get a consistent connection to the guest zone so why not the main zone?  I wouldn't have a problem leaving the guest zone active if I could just hide the SSID of the guest zone along with my main zone.

Going insane.
