Print function not working
« on: February 18, 2008, 05:27:03 PM »

Hi,
I recently bought DNS-323 and installed at my home. The first thing i did before installing any hard disk was to update the firmware to 1.04.
I have connected canon MP-530 (USB MFP) to DNS-323 and i have configured the printer in my system (Windows XP MCE SP2).
But when I tried to print a document the function failed. I checked the print queue and it is empty. But I havent received any printout.
I have connected DNS-323 to DIR-655 all with default settings.

Can someone please help me resolve this print issue?

Regards,
Deepak

Since you are not using Windows Vista I would recommend using firmware 1.03. Remove your printer from your PC and reconfigure the printer on the PC. We are currently looking into an issue with firmware 1.04 and the print server function.

Reading your posts, I understand that you (ECF) are somehow involved with this firmware issue.
You stated that you're working on the issue, correct?

My question, since I understand you must be a Dlink employee, is:

How come regular tech support guys (either phone or email) are CLUELESS regarding this firmware issue, and they make you lose time with them, and they ask stupid questions, etc etc etc

How come this company does NOT train its support personnel to provide better and informed answers to customers?

Also, somebody suggested here that going to the registries and deleting references to print server name using Regedit, is solving the problem.

I tried that and the problem was NOT solved?

Anybody else tried this succesfully?
If yes, can you please provide details, maybe I'm doing something wrong?

Thank you

Try installing the printer like this

a) Install the printer directly connected to your Windows system, make sure it works
b) Disconnect the printer from the Windows system and connect it to the DNS-323
c) Open the printer properties, select the ports tab, then add a new local port, naming it \\<DNS-323_ip_address>\lp

I've been able to get the print server functional on XP Professional on both firmware 1.03 & 1.04 and on Vista Business on firmware 1.04 (I never tried printing from Vista whilst on fw 1.03)

I just tried, but it does not work
The name I type for the local port is:

\\192.168.0.101\lp

The error I get is: "The network name cannot be found"

The IP is correct since I am able to ping it

What do I do wrong?

A ping response indicates that you can communicate with the device at the ip address whatever that device may be, it does not mean that the device is the one you think it is.

The 192.168.0.101 address is the first address in the DIR655 DHCP pool, and whilst it's possible for it to be any device, there is a high probability it's a PC and not the DNS-323

What do you get if you open a browser window to http://192.168.0.101?

In another thread you mention that you are using DHCP - it is always a good idea to use static ip addressing for any servers.

Thanks, I will try static IP tonight

I can assure you however that the address I used is the one for my DNS-323

I actually ping-ed the name

For some reason my DNS-323 is recognized under the name of

dlink-ec277e

and that matches the Ip I indicated here , and the ping is succesfull

Actually if you check on this forum on the next question about printserver I posted, there is a guy from Dlink who suggests that there might be issues with static IP for the print server

To me, it is clear that those people are clueless, and it is unacceptable that a real company is not capable to post a reliable product and support it accordingly.
Any more ides?

dlink-ec277e is a "translated MAC address" for the device and is the default name - you could also try \\dlink-ec277e\lp as the name of the print server - however, this would not be my recommendation in a home network with typically does not have name resolution servers.

Do you have netBIOS over tcp/ip enabled?

Open the local area network connection properties, select internet protocol (tcp/ip), properties, advanced, WINS

Ok, I did enable it

However, when I go to create the port in printer config, I get the same error:

"The network name cannot be found"

Sounds to me like you have a quirk in your system somewhere - I've created that share on three systems so far, two XP Professional and one Vista Business (this last for no other reason than to see if I could setup the printer on firmware 1.04 on Vista).

If you look at the posts on the DNS323.info forum, you'll find that a number of other people have also used this procedure to get printers working on 1.03, so I know it's not just me that it works for.

The NetBIOS over tcp/ip thing is a part of it - we're esseentially using the Window network redirector - I tried disabling NetBIOS over tcp/ip on one of the systems, and got the same message you were getting.

Sorry, but I'm out of ideas right now - if I come up with anything else I'll let you know
