655 REV B-Problems
« on: May 03, 2016, 03:33:21 AM »

I just got the rev B and have been using a Rev A (which I probably will have to use longer).
I notice the globe flashing, I read thats normal.
Then after some hours maybe 2 the globe either stops lighting at all or stays lit no matter what activity.
At this time the logs freeze, they wont log any more and clearing the logs usually says "logs cleared by administrator", but in this state its now blank.
I also notice on the Device Information page, LAN Computers is blank and Traffic Statistics are all 0

Rebooting from the webpage does nothing, the logs still blank no globe activity but the internet does work.

Is rev b a bugged version?
I was kinda excited to get a newer more powerful version but its not working correctly.

This is Firmware Version: 2.12NA

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Did the router come with v2.12 or something prior?
Did you follow this for updating FW? Link> >FW Update Process
Might try doing a manual reload using IE or FF and factory reset then set up from scratch with out loading any saved config files and see what happens.
Set IPv6 to Local Connection Only on the router.

What browser are you using?

Just logged in to confirm what Cartel is seeing.

Some time ago and I'm not certain when it happened, I am seeing similar problems to his.

The globe stops blinking after ~2hrs or so.  The WiFi indicator light will stay on constant and does not blink, and eventually may go off.  Both the Internet and WiFi still work fine, i.e packet routing is working normally (and at full speed) otherwise I wouldn't be typing this.  :)  Statistics will freeze and all of the sent/received numbers will copy themselves to be the same.  I've noticed that a reboot from the web page does not work, I have to unplug and plug it back in.

I did reset the router to factory settings, and then reload my stored settings which did not help.

I have Charter Internet, a Motorola SB6141, and 2.11NA firmware which I've had since it was released.  I don't know where Cartel has found firmware 2.12NA from, as I thought 2.11NA was the most recent official firmware.  But the difference doesn't seem to change anything in our cases.

I'm not quite sure what the cause is of this yet; I thought my router was just getting old and as long as it is routing packets fine, I'm holding off on a replacement until something with Nbase-T ports comes along.  Maybe later this year.

But if someone knows of a cause, let us know.

Thanks!

Have you tried doing a factory reset, manual re-load of either FW version, factory reset then set up from scratch, not loading any saved config from file and bly test to see if it still happens?

I haven't noticed this when I had my Rev B online with v2.11. This maybe a isolated problem in configuration or maybe something with the ISP services maybe. Since one one other posted about this and hasn't responded, this probably isn't a FW issue.

v2.12 was a security patch that wasn't officially released however remains a beta for users to try if they wish. The age of the router is probably hit EOL with any future development and won't see any FW updates I presume.

Ah; thanks Furry.

I thought about doing that factory reset and entering it all back in from scratch.  I have quite a few changes to make including multiple static IPs, different subnet, wireless settings, etc.  When I've done this before on a troubled router, it doesn't seem to help and I haven't changed anything in several months before it happened.

As you say, it's an EOL router and I don't expect a flood of posting here to suddenly say "we have the same problem", I just happened to come across this same posting that was oddly familiar to mine.  My last DIR-655 just started dropping packets randomly so I'd get partial web pages loading, timing out, etc. and this one is a few years old.

So no worries and thanks for your tips; I don't think 2.12NA would help this situation either so unless another beta comes out I won't break what still works.

Sounds good. Ya, sometimes doing a factory reset and setting up from scratch can help resolve things. If it's been running with out changes for a while, this leads me to think that could be something on the network that maybe the router doesn't like or possible HW issue. Ya, just haven't seen much postings about.

The 655s are still a good solid router. I wish there could be one more release but I think D-link has closed the door on this one. Maybe later at some point give v2.12 a try if needed.

Enjoy.  ;)

I have the exact same problems as the OP. Firmware Version: 2.11NA.  I've also done a factory reset and reloaded the firmware but it didn't have any affect.

Internet Service Provider and Modem Configurations
  • What ISP Service do you have? Cable or DSL?
  • What ISP Modem Mfr. and model # do you have?

Do you still have internet access when this happens?
I'm currently using my Rev B with the Mod v2.11 and all seems to be ok. Globe is still blinking on mine. It's connected to a SB 6121 cable modem on a 100/3 ISP service.

I have my WAN port speed set for 1000Mb and not Auto...might try that...

Not sure what else could be causing what your seeing.
Might try this and re-load the FW file, then factory reset and then set up from scratch. Don't reload a saved config file:
